Bravo Magazine: CM among the Top 10 Modeling Agencies 2018

How wonderful is that? If there is a model agency recommendation for young models, then we are! Especially for fast-moving TV. Only 3 years ago we were founded and already we are internationally active, from Tokyo to Los Angeles. After various top lists we are now listed for the second time in the Bravo as top recommendation for Germany. Big Merci!

Bravo Fashion Magazine: The Portal + Magazine for Kids and Teenagers

Bravo has been Germany’s most popular youth magazine for decades and is therefore an important voice when it comes to judging model agencies and their quality. Today a fan sent us a new article: GNTM castings + top agencies Germany.

Soon the Germany’s Next Topmodel Castings will start again. Heidi Klum is also looking for new top models in 2019. Besides practical tips for the live castings in various German cities, Bravo also gives recommendations for models who are looking for a long-term career and would like to work for the big customers in Germany and abroad. With us: Cocaine Models! For the second time Bravo Top 10, yes! One of the best alternatives to a short-term TV show, so to speak. With sustainable development, personal development, real jobs, not only for PR and a team that looks after you personally.

We would like to thank the Bravo editorial team that last year we were among the Top recommendations in Germany. In just three years we have overtaken major model agencies in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin, which is already 30 years old! Mission accomplished!

Do you know our fashion magazine?

Parallel to our model agency, we also founded our fashion magazine FIV in 2015. Since then we had great interviews, events and of course many unforgettable moments behind the scenes. With interviews of absolute supermodels like Alexandra Ambrosio, Victoria Secret Model, Zombie Boy from Canada and the USA or the sweet Pamela Reif with almost 4 million fans, just on Instagram. In our fashion magazine you will not only find exciting interviews with absolute instagram and YouTube stars, but also exciting interviews with our fashion photographer, models and of course fashion designers. Of course we also visit Fashion Week for you! Whether Berlin, London or New York, we are at the hotspots and backstage for you to report. Take a look at our fashion magazine.

Modeling Abroad – René Vowerk as a Male Model in Istanbul

Modeling Abroad Part #1 – Rene Vorwerk was 45 days in Istanbul! With model flat-sharing and everything that goes with it, a real experience: “You meet models from all countries”. Rene has shot for JACK & JONES, Lescon, Under Armour and Nike. Go abroad as a model? For many models, both new comers and professionals, a constant theme. With a stay abroad, some plans come your way, you will be rewarded with plenty of experiences – no matter where in the world you are.

Many young models are concerned about whether they can cope independently abroad, what exactly awaits them and which country or city is the right choice. René von Cocaine Models was just on the road as a model in Istanbul. I talked to him about his stay abroad in the Turkish metropolis.

René says Istanbul is a real experience: “You meet models from all countries”

CM: René, what attracted you to Istanbul?

I generally wanted to go abroad for modeling and since my mother agency in Germany was looking for models for Istanbul, I contacted them directly! Since I was already on vacation in Istanbul before, I knew that the city is super beautiful – I didn’t have to think long!

CM: How did you prepare for the “big trip”?

I prepared myself by training one or two extra days in the gym to really be physically on top level – that is very important for me as a model to be and remain competitive!

CM: Your stay was not only a “great adventure”, but above all of a professional nature, what experiences did you generally have as a model in this city?

New experiences for me were definitely the jobs for the music videos and the internet advertising film! Acting was completely new to me, but I really enjoyed it, because I always had super nice teams! Another good experience was that you meet models from other countries every day, talk, exchange opinions and experiences and make really good contacts and friendships. Being among’like-minded people’ every day feels great, there is always a lot to laugh about and it never gets boring!

Jack&Jones, Lescon, Under Armour and Nike: Model René on his success in Istanbul

CM: What types of models have a particularly good chance of success in Istanbul?

In my experience Central European blond model types have great chances in Istanbul! I was very successful there and was able to get three to four jobs every week!

CM: What kind of jobs did you get? How did they go off?

In the beginning there were some webshop jobs. After the first two weeks came the first jobs of castings, like music videos or catalog jobs for Turkish companies. After four weeks I was able to add webshops for well-known sports brands like’Nike’ and’Under Armour’. The longer I was there, the better the jobs. Towards the end I was in the top 2 for the new ‘Türkish Airlines’ commercial and did a campaign job for LTB jeans – the shop posters will also be released in Germany, of which I am very proud! Generally I have to say that I always had super nice people and teams around me. It was not always possible for everyone to speak English, but it was still possible to communicate by hand and foot!

CM: What was your daily routine in Istanbul like? What was difficult about everyday life? What was pleasant?

On days when you had a job, you were picked up by our driver between 7.00 am and 9.00 am and driven to the customer. Mostly the jobs were finished at 4 pm to 7 pm. Some of the jobs were followed by castings or fittings. If you weren’t home too late after all, you still went to the gym. Of course there were also completely free days, where we went shopping in the city or did a little’sightseeing’! It was difficult to concentrate on casting after a long job (often 10 hours) and smile at the customer, but it is absolutely part of the job! Long waiting times at castings were stressful – when you have to wait three hours or more with 60 models in one room and everyone tries to occupy themselves somehow. It was a pleasure to make new contacts again!

CM: How did you live there?

I lived in our Malemodel Apartment with three models at the beginning. In the end, there were only two of us. Our apartment was purposefully small, but from the location super good, we could reach everything under 10 minutes on foot!

Model flat share, gym and city: Istanbul has a lot to offer

CM: What have you done and experienced in the city besides casting and jobs?

After the model’s everyday life we often stayed in the huge shopping mall in Sisli, which is one of the largest in Europe. It took 10 minutes to walk from our apartment. There you could really buy everything you could imagine! There was a big casino with two roller coasters inside, that was breathtaking! One day we took the ferry to the Asian side of Istanbul and searched the streets and shops there! We walked a lot and took the subway.

CM: What are your personal highlights of Istanbul? (Also especially for models)

One of my highlights is Istanbul itself! It is an unbelievably beautiful city, both in the snow and in blue skies! Sitting in a café with friends, drinking Turkish tea and enjoying the best views of the Bosphorus and the other side is a super good feeling! For models it is very interesting, because it is a completely different model everyday life than I am used to from Germany, because you live together with other models and always have someone around you!

CM: What can you recommend to other models for a stay in Istanbul?

In any case, it is recommended not to crumble on the couch after a long and hard day, but to go outside to see something of this wonderful city! Generally, of course, it is very polite to be on castings and jobs – if everyone is happy and in a good mood, it’s even more fun!

CM: What did you particularly like as a model in Istanbul? What wasn’t so great?

I didn’t like the pay for the jobs so much less than you know it in Germany! Otherwise, if you have to say that you have a lot more jobs a week and it pays off in the end! I liked the team spirit and the people from my agency, we were like a family among each other. The jobs were similar – always very polite and nice people.

René recommendation: An extra tube of Face-Cleaner & cream!

CM: What problems and complications can German models encounter in Istanbul?

Some models have problems with Turkish food. If you don’t like that and don’t eat anything from the canteen at work, you always have to look after yourself and take something from home with you. The water from the pipes is not as clean as we are used to from Germany and so some models had problems with their skin – an extra tube of cream or cleaner from home is not wrong!

CM: What did you take with you from modeling in Istanbul for your future?

I have many friends and contacts to photographers and brands from all over the world! You are brought back to the ground a bit and you notice how good you are as a model in Germany when it comes to working hours! In general it was a super nice experience and I would never decide otherwise. I will definitely fly back this year and work there!

CM: What should models who want to come to Istanbul prepare for? What do I have to pay special attention to?

You can’t really prepare yourself, as I said, physical fitness is important – like everywhere else, even if you have chosen your profession as a model! You should pack plenty of creams and cleansing agents that you always use and prepare yourself for a hard everyday life! Istanbul is a 23 million city, there are 12 castings in one day, with travel times of up to one hour! In some areas you should not leave your apartment in the evening, as it can be dangerous! As in any big city, there are poorer areas that should definitely be avoided! We had really done everything right with the location of our apartment in Sishane!

model-maennermodel-rene-ausland-job-modeln-eu-istanbul-trends-blogger-blog-interview-(12)

In Istanbul, respect counts

CM: Cultural differences: Do foreigners in Istanbul and Turkey in general need to pay attention to anything? Are there certain “rules” and “customs” that everyone should respect / What is different about life there than in Germany?

In Turkey, people always treat older people with respect, get up in the metro for older people and leave them sitting down. Some Germans should be aware of that! Typical customs are people wiping their plates with bread to make it clear that they are full! In my first days I was surprised that people still wanted to give me a second helping until someone enlightened me!

CM: Would you recommend Istanbul for working for models from Germany? Why yes, why no?

I would definitely recommend Istanbul to the German models, because we can really get many jobs and are extremely in demand there! You gain a lot of experience for the job and get very good pictures from top photographers to expand your own portfolio! For me there is no reason not to work in Istanbul!

CM – Models Berlin

Modeling Abroad: Malia in Cape Town – Jobs, Castings and Models in South Africa

Going abroad as a model – a constant theme for many models, both New Comers and professionals. With a stay abroad, some plans come your way, you will be rewarded with plenty of experiences – no matter where in the world you are. Many young models are concerned about whether they can cope independently abroad, what exactly awaits them and which country or city is the right choice. Malia von Cocaine Models is currently on the road as a model in Cape Town. I talked to her about her stay abroad in the South African dream city.

Model Malia: “Cape Town was a coincidence”

CM: Malia, you’ve been modeling in South Africa for several weeks/months. What have you experienced there as a model?

Here you experience a lot – from shootings, sight seeing, surfing to shark diving. Cape Town is extremely diverse in every respect.

CM: How did you discover South Africa/ Cape Town in particular?

I’m honest, Cape Town was more of a coincidence. My friend wanted to spend a semester abroad at the university and I thought I could just come along and model there. Since we went on holiday a year ago and had an agency there, it was very easy to implement the plan then.

CM: How did you prepare for your stay in advance?

In the end you don’t have to prepare for Cape Town, the only difficult or “long” one is the work visa, so you should plan about 2-3 weeks until you have all documents together and drive to the embassy in Berlin. It’s also important what clothes you take with you. I say this quite explicitly because Cape Town does not offer good or high-quality shopping opportunities (in terms of shootings). So if you plan to test, you should bring some clothes.

Malia about the possibilities as a model in Cape Town

CM: What are your experiences in Cape Town as a model so far?

There is a lot of competition on the road, casting can be longer than you want and direct booking unfortunately doesn’t exist. The jobs are great and you have opportunities you wouldn’t have in Germany and the tests are great.

CM: From your experience: Which models are particularly in demand in South Africa?

Ü30 models with blond short hair. Also male models.

CM: What does the modeling industry in Cape Town look like?

There are extremely many agencies and in the summer (German winter) the customers make a pilgrimage to Cape Town and produce there, due to the low costs. Yes, the model fees are also about half as good as in comparison to Germany. You feel like in a German village, because there are extremely many German models/photographers/MUAs on site.

CM: What jobs have you done in Cape Town so far? How did they go off?

Sport jobs, a lot is produced there in this respect, but also TV commercials. The process is no different than in Germany, perhaps one difference: after the casting there is always a callback, i.e. a second casting. If you are taken then there is one day only for fitting and then it is only produced. The days are long because you start shooting very early (because of the light). People rarely work over lunchtime because the light is too hard and it usually doesn’t continue until the afternoon.

CM: What are your typical daily routines in South Africa as a model?

The agencies communicate via SMS and send you the casting. Then you go to the different casting studios and hope that not 100 other people are waiting for the same casting. Waiting times vary from 10 minutes to 4 hours per casting.

There are normal castings (here the waiting times are 1-4 hours) and “requested” castings (there you are specially requested, have an appointment and usually come directly to it). Requested castings are always the ones where you have the best chances, because the customer has already selected you based on his pictures and wants to see you.

CM: How do you live and how did you get your place? What do you recommend?

The agencies help or provide accommodation. But I’m not a fan of model apartments and that’s why we chose Airbnb for our own accommodation. This was not directly in Cape Town City, but only 15 minutes away, cheaper and on the beach – which I personally like better. If you are an independent person and like to organize yourself, I can only recommend such a thing. If you are perhaps unsure, you should seek the help of the agency.

Malias Cape Town Highlights

CM: What are your personal Cape Town highlights?

My highlight was one of my last test shootings with the photographer Jacques Weyers (photographed for Elle Southafrica and World of Swimsuits among others). We shot an editorial, which was very important to me personally and in which I could find myself very well. Besides, I was the only model Jacques tested with, which was like a little knighthood for me.

CM: Which model hot spots would you recommend to other models?

The Food Markets in Cape Town are amazing, and I’m also a fan of some restaurants: Kloofstreet House, Cafe Paradiso, Simply Asia, Beluga and Black Sheep. Osumo makes the best smoothies and to celebrate: Era, Tschin Tschin Rooftopbar, Shimmy Beachclub.

CM: What do you like about modeling in Cape Town? What is more problematic?

I find the locations in Cape Town fantastic. If you want to do tests, you can have extremely many settings and improve your book very much.

Another problem is that the fees are unfortunately not so good and you have to be careful about the crime in Cape Town.

CM: What does a model have to pay special attention to in South Africa? (rules, customs, differences to Germany etc.)

Cape Town is very Western/European, but yes there are townships and crime is high. In the evening when it gets dark you should not go out alone or to the beach, you should not carry too many valuables around with you, carry too expensive clothes, get involved in conversations in the street or just go with people. You should just pay attention to what’s going on around you. When you rent a car, you have to expect people to drive extremely badly and uncoordinated. We had a little accident because someone drove into our car (only fender damage) and my credit card was stolen from the machine. You just have to be aware of these things when you are there and plan to fly there. Nevertheless, you don’t have to be afraid on the spot, because if you just pay attention to these things you are safe.

Cape Town for the Model-Book – Germany for the Model-Gage

CM: What do you take with you from your stay in South Africa to Germany?

Cape Town is good for the book and for the experience, however, one simply has to say that one is “on paid vacation” there and that Plus Minus Null will return to Germany.

CM: Would you recommend South Africa, especially Cape Town, to other models? Why?

I think for Newfaces Cape Town is great, you can build your book with great photographers, especially in terms of commercials. Then I also think that Cape Town is very good for models Ü30, because the market there is very versatile and as a model you can work there very well even in old age. If you fall into this grid or simply want to gain experience abroad I can recommend Cape Town, but if you think you will make the big money there I have to say, unfortunately, stay in Germany.

CM: Dear Malia, thank you for the interview!

Wellness model, beauty model, hand model & hair model

Many young people want to become models. But for which area? Many people outside the model scene do not know that models are not the same. Of course, a model can be active in many different areas, but few have real success in all areas. There is a very simple reason for this: the different areas, such as beauty and wellness, catwalk or commercial, require different conditions. These can be combined, but often they cannot be combined in one person. While a catwalk model should be particularly tall and thin, it is more important for the commercial sector to have a beautiful face and a pleasant charisma. But what is the situation in the beauty and wellness area?

How important good beauty photos and spots are, you can see in the advertising!

What is a cosmetic or beauty or wellness model?

A beauty or wellness model often works for cosmetic and body care lines or the health care sector. That is why it is very important for the models to care for their body and face optimally. A clean skin, full and shiny hair, a firm figure. These are the ideal conditions to start out as a model in the beauty and wellness industry. Without these keys, no matter how beautiful your face is, how bright your eyes are or how tight your legs are, you have no chance! The top priority for a beauty and wellness model: the right care.

5 simple care tips for beauty models, wellness models and hair models

Removal of makeup

Quick to bed, with or without make-up? A Beauty-No-Go! Every evening, no matter how late it is, remove the make-up! Not only your bed linen, but also your skin will thank you for it. If you do not remove make-up properly, you will cause skin blemishes. A sticky mascara not only scares your roommates on the way to breakfast coffee, your eyelashes can also break off and you lose more eyelashes than usual. And, as you know, a woman can’t have eyelash volume enough.

Hair Care: Economical washing & care

Wash your hair as rarely as possible. A lot of people turn up their noses at the thought of it. But it is by no means unkempt if you only wash your hair twice a week, on the contrary! Your hair will thank you for it. You will get used to the rhythm and after a short time your hair will no longer quickly become greasy. They become considerably more robust, do not dry out and shine more. In addition, allow a hair treatment to take effect once a week. But beware: don’t overcare your hair!

Secret weapon for tired eyes

You worked until 8am, didn’t find an end at a party or just had a bad night’s sleep? A morning look in the mirror is enough to see: You can’t go to an audition or a job like that! Your eyes are reddened, swollen, and you have dark circles around your eyes. The simple instant solution: Cooling and caring eye pads from the drugstore. A maximum of 10 minutes and your eye area will not only feel relaxed, but also look that way. The simple secret weapon with immediate effect.

Naturally full lips

Not everyone is naturally blessed with full and rosy lips. There is no reason to run for a beauty doctor or make permanent make-up. A good (!) lip balm with vitamin A stimulates the microcirculation in your lips. This makes your lips look plump, soft and rosy.

Naturally beautiful skin

Skin care is a decisive criterion for clean and beautiful skin. The first step is to find out what skin type you are. Do you have oily, dry or mixed skin? If you have analyzed this, for example at the dermatologist or beautician, then you should use appropriate products. You should invest in a day and a night cream. Moisturising care is particularly important for young skin. Be careful not to over-oily your skin, as this will cause annoying pimples. In summer a light moisturizer is usually sufficient, in winter you should choose richer night creams. Perfect for dry skin: An effective moisturizing serum that can be applied under your make-up. You should also make sure you get enough sleep, an average of 7.5 hours a day, and drink plenty of water.

Application areas for beauty, hair, hand and wellness models

Beautymodel – Cosmetics, make-up and hair products

Beauty models can be used in different areas of advertising. Whether in magazines, on advertising posters, flyers, in a TV or online spot or at a live show. The face is in the foreground.

Handmodel – professional for details and product presentation

Handmodels are used in advertising especially in the nail care industry. Also for commercials or advertising images for products that are operated by hand, such as smartphones.

Hair Model – Full shine for new commercials

Hair models are mostly found in TV commercials, online, print or poster advertising for hair care products or hairdressers.

Wellnessmodel – charisma plus beautiful figure

Wellness models are used in the health and wellness industry. For example, to advertise wellness centres, beauty studios, fitness studios or pharmacies. Wellness models are also used in sporty photo series in magazines.

Exclusive Model Coaching: Catwalk Training and Personality / Acting

Personality. Posing. Catwalk. Sunday morning started our long prepared model coaching in our agency building in Cologne’s Mediapark. Two experienced model coaches, Lutz and Omega, supported our Cocaine Models team with a personality coaching and a catwalk training for the models. The response was great and our models were highly motivated to improve their skills. Michelle accompanied our models and gives a short insight into the exclusive model coaching.

Well structured model coaching

At half past nine our Cocaine Models team starts with the last preparations for the Model Coaching in the Mediapark in Cologne. Screens are set up, small snacks prepared and the camera equipment checked. The first models arrive on time at half past nine. We are excited and the models are already looking forward to the exclusive model coaching. The day is well structured, starting with personal coaching at Lutz, followed by catwalk training at catwalk expert Omega. Besides, short videos of our models are shot and Polaroid photos are taken.

Personality coaching with modeling professional Lutz

Lutz enters the room, numerous pairs of eyes examine the self-confident personal coach, who also works as an experienced model. His charisma is likeable and engaging, we are convinced: He can give our models a lot in the matter of “appearance” with customers. He talks entertainingly about his experiences in the model industry, emphasizing how important the charisma and body language alone are for the first impression. Very important: Our models must understand that their body is the decisive working instrument. A training in advance is very important, everyone must get to know his body exactly. The charisma is not only conveyed by emotions, that is new to many. Body Language: An underestimated means to show character. The models must take up space with their aura and show full presence. Interesting: Customers read the characteristics of potential models based on their posture, without many words is a judgment made, job: Yes or no!

How to convey emotions correctly

How do I look sexy? How do I radiate grief when I’m not sad at all? How can I develop anger at the push of a button? Typical thoughts and problems of a model. Acting talent is a must in the modeling business. Just like an actor, a good model must be able to slip into different roles. While the models learn different posing tricks, our photographer Oli takes Polaroid photos and performance videos with each model in single passes. English language skills are tested: Everyone must introduce themselves briefly in English. Lutz goes through some exercises with the other models and lets them recreate typical situations from everyday model life. Shy models have no chance to hide in the crowd, Lutz proves his skills. After one and a half hours, Lutz is almost unstoppable and our models are thrilled, the personality coaching is coming to an end. In cooperation with Lutz, our photographer Oli carries out a short sample shooting with some of the models in front of the group. The newly learned posing techniques are immediately demonstrated. The coaching has had an effect! Our models skilfully implement the learned posing tricks. At the end of the training Oli gives the models some tips for working with different photographers. Now the whole team deserves a short break. The small snack buffet lures with different delicacies and coffee smell fills the foyer.

Catwalk Coaching with catwalk professional Omega

Catwalk professional Omega is already waiting motivated in the event room. Our models occupy their seats with fresh energy and satisfied faces. Omega starts with a big smile and a short straight-walk. WOW, he knows his stuff. His top catwalk rule: Every catwalk performance is about selling! Pressure and internal tension are good, but there must still be a special serenity. The presentation on the catwalk must be controlled, yet relaxed and natural. Fashion is in the foreground, the models only present the products. You have to play a role not only during photo shoots, but also on the catwalk. Omega introduces different catwalk types and does some exercises with the models. The event room is filled with sales rattling, the models improve their weaknesses under Omega’s instructions. Omega spreads a good mood, the models are motivated and constantly improving. Especially the posing turn turns out to be a small catwalk trap. No problem! The group takes it with humor: Like actors on a film set, our models repeat their walks until Omega gives his “Go”. The final walk ends the instructive and entertaining catwalk training. Let’s hear it for Omega!

After the success comes the relaxation

The last show videos will be available soon. Our entire team is gathering and the models are performing their new Catwalk arts. Satisfactory feedback goes through the round. We are proud of our protégés and grateful for the great work of the coaches. A successful Sunday comes to an end. From 5 pm the models make their way home with many new insights. Our Cocaine Models team takes down the props and sets off for the well-earned weekend.

WOMEN Management (Paris, Milan, New York) visiting: International Scouting

Last week was it so far. Roberto, the Head Scout of Women Management came to the agency in Cologne and looked at our best of the best for placements. Our top girls came to the agency to introduce themselves to Roberto.

Casting Day with WOMEN: Polaroids, catwalk and measurements

Eugenia is especially great because of her bright eyes and her gap between her teeth. In front of the camera she is an absolute professional – at her first shooting everyone was directly amazed! Luisa – our absolute superstar. Her long red hair, the gap between her teeth and her sweet smile make our Luisa unique. Also present were our newcomers Gloria, Linn, Franzi, Michelle, Josephine, Zoe and Alice – so young but already with such a great potential! Of course, our great Marie should not be missing – with her look and her measurements she is great for commercial jobs!

A few polas, take measurements, look at the book and talk about possible periods, that’s enough for Roberto to get an idea of the girls. Take a look at some impressions from that day here:

Modeling in Frankfurt / Germany: Questions and answers

Today we wanted to give all young models in Frankfurt a little insight into the work of a model agency in Frankfurt. Did you know most jobs don’t even take place in Frankfurt! But let’s start with the basic questions about modeling. Becoming a model is quite demanding because you start at school. So you not only have to focus on good grades, but also on keeping your qualifications and improving yourself. Basically, however, the question always arises first:

How old do I have to be to start modeling?

If you want to be represented and managed as a model in an international model agency like ours, you should be at least 15 years old. As a modeling agency, we recommend that you concentrate fully on school first.

Full concentration on school

Good grades and a good basic education will help you a lot in your job later on. After all, the better you get, you have to take flights, you have to reach hotels on time, that in constantly new cities, in which you have to find your way around again and again. Sometimes you have to show some spontaneity for small advertising jobs or moderations. After the shootings or during the breaks, there are little small talks. If you have a magazine shooting and can’t talk to the others off the set, who have usually already seen a lot of the world, you shine less than with good general knowledge. But the closer you get to the end of your school time, the more often you will receive booking requests from your model agency for Berlin or cities outside of Berlin. In addition, there are often days of travel, so you will be on the road for two or three days. The better your grades, the more likely it is that your school is willing to give this freedom.

Legal requirements and labor law

The second important point in the minimum age of 15 years are the work laws and regulations that exist in Germany. With 15 years you can work much more freely, under 15 years you need special permission, e.g. from the youth welfare office but also from a specialist. In an international model agency like ours you work a lot with fashion and products for a target group that is also only over 16 years old. That’s why international modeling agencies are focusing on models aged 15, 16.

International Jobs and Clients

The third important point, if you want to work internationally, you need time to travel. Such a stay abroad usually lasts at least 45 days, but usually even 60 days. The only time students really have for such a long stay including travel are the summer holidays. During the summer holidays, however, there are general rest periods, not only in Germany but also abroad. Families go on holiday and less is produced. Of course there are then also considerably fewer jobs for models. Some agencies, in Paris or Milan, even close down the agency completely for a week or two during this time. The high season for such a stay is then again September to December and then from February to July.

In which cities are the most jobs for models?

If you want to start your career from Frankfurt, you will first focus on Germany and the larger cities near you. These include above all Cologne but also Düsseldorf. The simple basic rule says that the more people live in a city, the more jobs, more advertising agencies, more manufacturing companies but also more service providers and more advertising opportunities in the city centre there are. The location of the city plays the two factor, e.g. there is a clear Top 10 in Germany. You can get most jobs as a model in Berlin and Hamburg. Especially in Berlin there are many international productions, in Hamburg there are many media agencies and therefore also many offers for models. Then come Munich, Cologne and shortly afterwards Frankfurt am Main, Hanover and Düsseldorf.

In Frankfurt am Main, it is definitely best to look in the direction of Cologne and Düsseldorf. But you can also do some interesting and exciting jobs in Frankfurt.

What jobs are there in Frankfurt? Of course you can do a wide range of jobs in Frankfurt. For example, you can work for fashion designers in Frankfurt city centre and present fashion to customers from all over the world. Showrooms are closed events, usually only the fashion designers, someone from marketing and two representatives of the customer are present. You present fashion on the body. It’s called a showroom model. In Frankfurt you will also be doing many jobs in showrooms at the beginning of your modeling career. Besides you will do your first photo shootings as a model in Frankfurt. Probably most for Instagram and with growing experience also for the first Frankfurt online shops. No matter if it’s about fashion, products from the technology industry or sports. The better you get and the more diverse you are, the higher the chances that customers will book you for jobs in Frankfurt.

With increasing experience, the size of productions also increases. If you are first class, you will make it to the first commercials, as well as here for Opel, produced with three of our models near Frankfurt! With a production team of over 50 people, a helicopter, over ten cars that can be seen in the spot alone and a whole production team behind it. Here you can see the finished commercial of Opel.

How do I apply to a Frankfurt model agency?

You don’t need much for your application in Frankfurt, the experienced eyes of the model agency see the requirements for models at a glance. All we need from you as a model agency are three to four photos. Important, you don’t have to book a professional photographer to improve your model portfolio. At the beginning, with the application, very simple mobile phone photos are enough for us as an agency. The important thing is that you can be seen in daylight. You should not wear makeup or styling so that nothing distracts from you as a person. After all, naturalness is also the most important thing for customers later on. When you later negotiate with customers or send models abroad, many decisions are made on the basis of Polaroids. Polaroids are just such simple shots. Without styling, makeup, special outfit, nothing distracts from you. The background is a simple concrete wall, you are standing in front of the camera, looking into the lens, without posing and emotions. Naturalness is the A&O.

If you really want to become a model, you should avoid any unnatural influences in advance. In addition belong simple gel nails in addition, the course in the Solarium, hair extensions, spraying lips on, do without everything! Because you are beautiful as you are!

In the following you simply send your pictorial material to model agency, in addition a few dates as well as your contact, your name, residence in addition, the most important measures as well as your body and ready-made size. If a model agency is interested in you, they will get back to you relatively quickly, most likely within five days. So the process doesn’t take that long, if you don’t get any feedback from the modeling agencies, you didn’t like the look. Don’t ask questions because every model agency has limited capacity and wants to take care of the models completely. If you were in an agency tomorrow, you’d want all the attention. If you don’t fit, you should accept this and try your luck in another agency.

How big do I have to be as a model in Frankfurt?

Body height plays a decisive factor, even if there is no completely uniform scale of measurements, the fashion world in women in particular focuses on a minimum body height of 175cm. You should not be taller than 181cm. This is the perfect size for pre-cut garments as well as for fashion shows in Frankfurt. Meanwhile, when applying as a male model, you should be at least 185 cm tall and no more than 191 cm. So you fit perfectly to the female cast, even if they wear high heels. It is important that you are not too well trained as a man, you should have a defined body, not be a muscle pack.

These are the prerequisites for models who want to enter the fashion industry. Of course measurements can also deviate, models with 170 cm can also have success, however, it becomes purely statistically less. But if you try hard, show full commitment, who knows! You can also be more trained as a man, e.g. if you want to become a sports or fitness model. In an international agency like ours, however, you should usually meet the requirements.

The clothing size for women should be between 32 and 36. Curvy Models are usually available in sizes from 42, for men the ideal size at the beginning of their career is 48 to 52, if you want to become even more of a minimum size, then take a look at the requirements for models here.

What happens after my agency admission in Frankfurt am Main?

The following steps are very different from your age or the time you will spend at school. For example, if you still have two years of school ahead of you, the first two years will focus on building up your model portfolio and preparing it for the national and international markets. Your agency will arrange appointments with good photographers who can help you with your portfolio. It is important for you to always pay attention to the quality, it is better to have few good photos than a mass of reasonably good ones. Because at the latest when you are competing as a model, e.g. for jobs in other cities such as Hamburg or Berlin, you need a strong portfolio in which the customer recognizes how good you are with just a few moments.

After the first year it starts slowly with the first jobs, it takes a little while, because you first have to build a model book and you have to have good performance in school, so that you also get free, most productions, almost all, are during the week. If there is a day of travel and a day for the return journey, and the booking is for 2 days, you are quickly out for a week. That’s why you will work even less during your school time, first doing smaller jobs and the aforementioned showrooms in Frankfurt city centre or for Frankfurt online shops or social media channels such as Instagram photo shootings.

If you are already at the end of your schooling with the agency admission, it is sometimes already about placement abroad. As a model you should go further and further, from Frankfurt to Berlin, from Berlin to London and from London to Milan, Paris, Shanghai and Tokyo. This is exactly the plan of an international model agency and the reason why you play here in the professional league. This requires special commitment, self-interest and of course a constant will to improve oneself. A model’s job is very demanding!

+ Do you know?

Today we want to show you what is important if you want to become a model in Hamburg and what requirements you have to meet.

Prerequisites for Models in Hamburg

The competition is great! Many who live in the country try their luck in Hamburg. Maybe you live in the countryside, in a village or in a small town, or maybe in the middle of Hamburg, Altona or HafenCity. However, the same requirements apply to all of them, e.g. when it comes to body size, clothing, but also the measurements around the chest, hips and waist. However, the dimensions are only part of the requirements, as well as a healthy diet, body care but also paying attention to figure, hair, nails,… many details most people don’t think about when they talk about how easy or difficult it is to become a model. Once all the basic requirements have been met, however, it’s all about the model’s own character and personality. Working with management is very important, at the beginning it is less intense, but the longer you work as a model, the more intensive the collaboration becomes.

  • General good appearance and well-groomed appearance
  • Healthy diet and regular exercise
  • Professional collaboration with management and customers
  • Ambition and commitment to the job as a model

Modeling & School? First Castings and Jobs

For example, if you are still at school at the beginning and have two or three years ahead of you, you will do fewer jobs at the beginning. This is quite normal, because you should concentrate on school and your education! However, as soon as the school comes to an end, the first international planning will ideally begin. If it doesn’t work internationally, you can still look forward to many more jobs! Because as a student you are often confined, between the different exams, the holidays, enjoy your free time! As soon as you have the time, you can travel, you can plan travel days, you are flexible and you have a good school leaving certificate in your pocket. For example, as a model it is important that you can express yourself well, many customers speak English, so it is very important that you speak good English! But there is also a little bit of mathematics, e.g. when it comes to calculating your own travel expenses. The more successful you are as a model, the more you will invest in a photographer. Especially in Hamburg there are many good photographers. Of course, you no longer have to work with everyone. That’s why good photographers in Hamburg also cost money. But as soon as you earn money in your first jobs, you will also invest in the first photographers to improve your model portfolio!

Live casting – A look behind the scenes

You haven’t seen a live model casting yet? Here is a small example from our YouTube Channel!

Application to a modeling agency as a hamburger

If you want to apply in a Hamburg model agency, you don’t need a professional photo shoot. All your model agency wants to see in Hamburg are Polaroids. Polaroids are super easy to create, all you need is a good friend or a good friend, a mobile phone and daylight! In the city centre you have to get the right outfit, black trousers, a black top, black or white, plain shoes. Your underwear should be black, too. As a woman you should also buy a bikini and high heels. If you are new to Hamburg, here are some recommendations for you: Fashion boutiquen Hamburg. For your model agency you grab good daylight and a relatively simple wall. The background of your photo should be as bad as possible so that nothing distracts from you! You don’t need make-up or styling. All your modeling agency wants to see is you!

Model Coachings by CM – Catwalk Training, Acting & more

Send photos: Professional shooting or simply with your mobile phone?

In the next step you take a full body photo, a portrait and another portrait with a smile. First in normal outfit, black jeans, black top and shoes. If you are already over 16 years old, you can also send bikini Polaroid or Polaroids in underwear. If you’re under 16, you shouldn’t do that! It is important to be seen with your whole body, once your face in the portrait and another photo with a smile. Why is laughter so important? As a model, you work in advertising for a lot of jobs. Advertising sells through friendliness, emotions that you as a model can arouse in you, better than anyone else! That’s why there should be a laughing portrait of you.

After the recording: Patience is a virtue – also in Hamburg!

Before you send your application to a modeling agency, you should talk to your parents and of course you should also think about the head gasket you are entering into as a model. You want to build a professional career. This can only be achieved with the support of a management and the network that comes with it. So you always have to be prepared that no success will come overnight. It took the best youtube years. It took the greatest Hollywood actors years. No star is born overnight. That’s why you should always stay professional, you should take the time for your education, that is for your school, and you should give yourself and your career time. If you develop step by step, build up your modelbook over the first years, then do bigger jobs or go abroad for a few months or years, that’s the right way! A reputable model agency like ours supports you with professional management and support to ensure that you get your Modelmappe develops perfectly and builds you up for the ideal market, for your requirements. Once you have taken your photos for your first model application in Hamburg, all you need is your contact details and the most important measurements, as well as your body size, shoes or clothing size. That’s all a good modeling agency needs from you! The model scouts in the agency have a lot of experience and a very professional view to evaluate applications from Hamburg.

Jobs in Hamburg: Online Shops, Social Media & TV Advertising

When you start modeling, your first jobs are mainly to do Showrooms. Such a showroom in Hamburg is a small, internal event where designers, marketing managers or sales people meet with the customer to select parts of the new collection. These new fashion pieces should of course be shown to you as a model! How are the seams processed, what is the nature of the materials, how are the jeans or the jacket positioned? In order for the designer, sales manager or marketing manager to have a model directly on site, young models in particular are booked for this type of job. You usually work in downtown Hamburg, where designers meet their clients. Once you’ve gained your first experiences and upgraded your model portfolio through test shootings with photographers, you’ll get your first jobs for social media shootings or for online shops!

Start: Shootings, Social Media, Online Shop and Image

There are always new fashion collections or new products. Exactly, it doesn’t always have to be about fashion trends! Just look at smartphones, there is always a new iPhone or a new mobile phone from Samsung Galaxy to HTC. There are also many new models, new commercials and photo shoots in the automotive industry. Models are needed for every new brand and every new model. Also for new seasons but also for different seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter! Every emotional set needs its individual composition of photo models, production team but also advertising agency, which creates the creative concept. There are always new jobs in Hamburg! If you work hard and show your modeling agency or management that you are professional on jobs and on time, the customers are satisfied with you, then you will eventually get your first commercials!
Next Level: Jobs for commercials and TV advertising in Hamburg

Nowadays, the word TV is of course often equated with broadcasting, e.g. through YouTube advertising. Advertising in video format, be it the advertising film for upstream YouTube videos, the advertising film for TV and cinema or Influencer Marketing with videos on YouTube, here lies the greatest potential for you as a model. Since the production of commercials by media agencies is quite complex, the productions are not only used in Germany. Unlike regional brands that use your photos in the Hamburg area, for example, such TV commercials are often broadcast throughout the German-speaking region, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. However, many spots are also shown throughout Europe or even internationally, in America and Asia. Hamburg offers great potential for you as a model!

Modeling Agency Berlin: Application, Castings, Jobs + Teenager

You are looking for a modeling agency in Berlin? And when you find them, how do you apply the best? Castings, photo shoots, trips abroad: So you have to apply in a modeling agency in Berlin!

Requirements for Models in Berlin

First, you should think about the requirements of models. Every modeling agency is focused on a specific market. There are the modeling agencies that work mainly in fashion but also with high fashion. The more exclusive the brands, the more international, the stricter the customer’s specifications. These high fashion agencies also often work abroad – like us.

This raises the first question, do you have time to travel? Such a stay abroad for models usually takes 45 to 60 days. Here you should not only have time to travel, your height should also be based on the international market. That means you should be at least 175 cm tall as a girl / woman, ideally 178 cm to 180 cm. For men models, these measurements are only 10 cm larger. If you meet both criteria, you have the perfect conditions for a high fashion modeling agency and national and international jobs.

Those who do not meet these criteria, should take a look at People agencies! People agencies are less focused on the international high-fashion market and are more involved in advertising. In commercials, it is less relevant if the body size fits perfectly to the international dimensions, but also the proportions around the waist, waist and chest. The jobs in people agencies are just as demanding, from the online shop to the commercial. For Best Ager Models, Tattoo Models, and more. the perfect choice. Here you can find good people agencies.

Become a Model with 14, 15, 16 Years

When do I start modeling the best? Stop: Your school always works! That you have good grades is a very important prerequisite for your entire life. Sure, school is still about “apples and pears”, but in your later life as a model, it’s about the euro and the dollar. Therefore, stay focused on the school first, that should remain so. Why is that? During school, you have very little opportunity to work as a model, you can not travel, you can not stay out of school for several days, and there are always retreats. So if you decide to model at the age of 14, 15 or 16, you should definitely bring a lot of patience with you. It really only starts as a model when you have finished school in Berlin. Then you can not only work in Berlin but also in Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt or even abroad and travel to great cities, such as Paris, Milan and London. As a Berlin model, you can take it much further, traveling to New York and Tokyo. But first everything starts very small.

Model Agency Berlin: Male Models

Are there really any differences between female models and male models? Yes. If you work as a model agency in Berlin with men’s models, there is a difference in the structure of the model portfolio. Many photographers are men and prefer to photograph women. Much like female photographers usually prefer to take pictures of men. Since the number of male photographers is higher than that of females, building a book takes longer than women do.

Nerver seen before: Paris, Milan, Lndon

That’s why it pays to go abroad as a male model. Special if you are still completely new to the market. If you have worked as a model only in Berlin so far, of course, nobody knows you in Italy or France. This effect, we call it “Never Seen Before”, you can perfectly use as young young model from Berlin to advance your career. When you make the first castings at a Fashion Week, you will gain valuable experience and for the first time see how much competition there is and how strong your competition is. 4 million people live in Berlin, in the megacity it is often 10 million, as in New York and Istanbul more than 15 million people or even in Tokyo almost 30 million people. Not only are ten times as many jobs here as in Berlin, here you also have ten times as much competition. Therefore, as a Berlin model agency, you should also look carefully into which market you like as a type.

That your parents know about everything is a very important point! As a model, sometimes you are under stress, especially if you are already a teenager and you are still in school in or out of the city center. When stressful times come, it’s important to have somebody in your back to keep you away. Sometimes just a sweet word is enough, “you can do it”!

Haute Couture & Pret-a-Porter – Running styles of a fashion show

In a fashion show on the catwalk, which is also called Catwalk, presented the new collections of a designer of models. A distinction is made between haute couture fashion and pret-a-porter fashion. Haute Couture comes from France and means literally superior cutting art. In fashion jargon extravagant, individual and high-quality fashion creations by a designer haute couture are called. The haute couture fashion pieces of a designer are the gems of a designer, they are not suitable for everyday use, haute couture is true art that models present on the catwalk. Haute Couture serves the very special appearance. The more valuable the materials used, the higher the price. There is no limit. In contrast to haute couture, there are Pret-a-Porter collections. pret-a-Porter Fashion also comes from France and means “ready to wear”, a fashion that can be worn in everyday life. The fashion collections are available in retail outlets, including department store chains. The designers have created the pieces not only as an art object for the catwalk, but the fashion collections should come to the man or the woman. The price is different, it also comes here to price differences, however, the price is in the average range in the middle class and is affordable. Co-founder of this type of fashion line is Pierre Cardin.

Pret-a-Porter fashion & running style at the fashion show

What is Pret-a-Porter exactly?

Pret-a-Porter fashion, also known as ready-to-wear fashion, describes the ready-made, ie not tailor-made, fashion collections of designers and labels. Ready-made fashion is one that we find in retail in various, fixed sizes on the shelves. (Example size 38 or M) Earlier, the fashion industry was horrified at the first catwalk presentations by designer Pret-a-Porter collections – not tailor-made = not exclusive! Quite normal in the modern world – at Fashion Weeks all over the world, the designer’s Pret-a-Porter collections are admired and celebrated. For the designers themselves, the Pret-a-Porter collections are extremely important in addition to haute couture, because the ready-to-wear fashion boosts the marketing of designers enormously. In public, the label builds its image and sets trends that can really be worn! Of course, also among the Pret-a-Porter collections are fashion highlights that only very bold fashionistas REALLY wear on the street – here too: The designer wants to attract attention, to keep in conversation and in the memory of fashion specialists.

Where did Pret-a-Porter come from?

Yves-Saint-Laurent caused a stir in the 60’s as one of the first known designers on the catwalk with his Pret-a-Porter collection. But who “invented” Pret-a-Porter? The Italian designer Pierre Cardin developed the fashion art Pret-a-Porter.

Pierre Cardin – His way to the designer of Pret-a-Porter fashion

Pierre Cardin was born in Italy in 1922. In 1945 he moved from Italy to France, Paris. He began his career in the fashion industry as a fashion designer at Paquin. He developed the costumes for the movie “Beauty and the Beast”. In 1947, the talented Italian moved to the designer label “Dior”. Three years later he started his own label and developed Pret-a-Porter Mode. In 1953, his first fashion collection for women appeared in 1957 followed by the men’s collection.

The seasons of Pret-a-Porter fashion worldwide

The designers’ Pret-a-Porter collections are presented on the runway during two fashion seasons, once in spring / summer and once in autumn / winter – the classic fashion seasons. The presentations of the Pret-a-Porter fashion take place at fashion weeks in the fashion capitals of New York, Milan, London and Paris. But also in the adolescent fashion cities of Berlin, Madrid, Amsterdam and other cities, the collection presentations of the designers, both established designers and celebrated New Comer, take place twice a year at the corresponding seasons in the beginning and middle of the year.

Excursus: The interim seasons

Only twice a year, so every six months, fashion on the runways of fashion metropolises? Unthinkable – no one can stand it! I agree. That’s why, in addition to the main seasons, tadaaa, there are various interim seasons.

Resort – Fashion Collections

In February, the new Pret-a-Porter pieces by the designers regularly hang in stores. Already in November, the interim season for resort fashion begins. Since every fashion fan can look forward to the summer and anticipate the new trends.

Cruise – fashion collections

Cruise, as the name suggests, are fashion collections for the travel-mad fashion fans. Cruise is a sub-category of resort-fashion, specializing in jet-set customers who escape the winter and roast in the sun in December. In the past, this was especially typical of the richer society that enjoyed cruising to warmer regions during the winter months. Hence the name “Cruise” in the style of “cruise”. Today, “Cruise” is part of the resort collection, it is hardly differentiated.

Pre-Fall – Fashion Collections

The counterpart to the more summery Pret-a-Porter Resort collection, is the autumn-winter Pret-a-Porter Pre-fall collection. This comes in July in the shops. Customers enjoy new designs for fall and winter, mostly made of lighter fabrics.

Capsule Collection Fashion

Capsule Collection, a collection that can not really be assigned to any season. The “timeless” Pret-a-Porter fashion of the year. These collections are also called Special Editions and appear unexpected and not regular.

Haute couture at the fashion show – what exactly is that?

Haute couture is the “high society” of fashion collections by designers. The term comes from France and refers to the upscale designs of fashion designers from the top tier. Who belongs to the circle of Haute Couture designers, such as Chanel, Dior or Ellie Saab, decides the French fashion association “Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture”. The designers, also known as “couturiers”, must adhere to “strict” rules in order to defend their place in haute couture. The French fashion association sets rules and specifications so that the ranks of Coutuers remains exclusive. Elaborate, extravagant and in reality hardly wearable fashion, especially handcrafted, precious and luxurious dresses are part of haute couture. Another special feature of the impressive robes: Finest handwork! Of course, such a “unique” can hardly be a lesbian, only a very selected, narrow circle of the rich is one of the customer base for haute couture fashion. The price for a haute couture robe is dizzyingly high. One of the few places off the catwalk to marvel at haute couture fashion is the red carpet of very exclusive events, such as the Oscars. In contrast to the pure “art objects” of the haute couture of the past few years, some robes, dresses and now also trousers are quite “bearable” for upmarket events.

Where does haute couture fashion actually come from?

Haute couture comes from France in the mid-19th century. Charles Frederick Worth was the first, and thus the so-called founding father, to offer tailor-made and handcrafted, exclusive fashion according to his own designs. Until then, tailor-made products were manufactured exclusively according to the wishes of the customer. Worth made a turnaround in the fashion industry. Subsequently, the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne joined together, a committee which today describes itself as a fashion association and still sets the rules in terms of haute couture. Only if the collection of a designer label is approved by this committee, the Desiger may present his Haute Couture line under this genre, on the couture shows of Fashion Weeks.

Alta Moda – haute couture from Italy

The Italian sister of French haute couture is the so-called “Alta Moda”. Unlike the term “haute couture”, the term “Alta Moda” is not protected and may be used freely among designers. In addition to Milan, there are also Alta Moda shows in Florence or Rome, there is no set schedule or fixed location for these fashion shows. The world-famous luxury designer duo of Dolce & Gabbana will be presenting their Alta Moda collections in Milan. In addition to established designers, New Comer will be presenting their collections to a wide audience in Rome during the Fashion Week.

Fashion Show – Various walk styles for the presentation of fashion

Two important running styles characterize the catwalk at fashion shows. The wording is different and depends on the choreographer. Roughly, the running styles are divided into the following two divisions.

Pret-à-Porter – casual walk for models

The Casual Walk is, in keeping with the collections, looser than the Design Walk. The models are allowed to slightly swing their hips, the upper body and the gaze need not be rigid. There is a friendly, motivating smile on the model’s face. At the end of the catwalk a posing takes place. The models seek eye contact with the audience. A wink, a kiss in the air or a sexy smile are allowed and welcome.

Haute Couture – Fashion / design walk of the upper class

When it comes to the design walk, the models really function as mannequins, that is, it’s all about the outfit. The look of the models is directed straight forward, no expression is distorted, no eye contact takes place. The shoulders are pulled back, the pelvis goes forward. The models try not to move their torso while running. At the end of the catwalk no posing takes place. The model should not distract from the collection of the designer, this is absolutely the focus.

The Fashion Show – Catwalk & Catwalk Tips for Models

You are not a professional on the catwalk yet? Then take a look at our tips for the catwalk! Of excessive importance is an upright posture. You should be able to balance a book on your head. Pull your shoulders back and push your pelvis a little forward. Make sure you do not lean back too much. When you take the first step on the catwalk, you should always be the first to use your ball of the foot. Almost like you want to sneak. This looks a lot more elegant than when you first appear with the hoes.

Run with momentum and character: Find your balance

The important thing is that you put one foot in front of the other. You really should literally take this to heart. Your gait should form a zigzag. Thus, you also get the necessary momentum, which makes your walk only appear characteristic. Your steps should be great, but you should not do a splits. Also always remember to swing your hip. Always move your arms and hands evenly. It should not look like you have two stiff arms.

Your focus should be on the catwalk to a point in front of you

Your look should adapt to the style of your clothes. Try to smile with your eyes and keep your chin always lifted. Keep your head straight and steady. At the end of the catwalk is usually always the rotation. Put your left foot in front and pause for a few very short beats of the music. You should turn your shoulders and feet sideways while your head is still pointing forward and you are looking over your shoulders. After the break, turn your foot in the opposite direction and start to run with the front right foot. Only at the end do you turn your face away from the spectators.

But the most important thing is that you try to get your character involved in your walk. And you should always find yourself very attractive. Because only when you are convinced of yourself, you can convince the audience of you.

  • If you still can not walk well on high shoes, then you will learn it quickly with a little practice. My ultimate tip to keep you from slipping on the catwalk is to lick the soles of your higheels with some lemonade or coke. Your soles start to stick after a short time and you will surely strut over the catwalk.
  • Watch catwalk videos of really good models or visit the fashion shows yourself.
  • Let your friends film while running and posing. You can then watch the videos, and you’ll see for yourself what else you need to fix on yourself.
  • It does not matter if you stumble but you should get up dignified and keep going. Even in such stressful and embarrassing situations, you should stay professional and self-confident.
Try to smile with your eyes (Smize: Smile with your eyes).

Do it yourself: Bust, Waist, Hips and Height

These are the measurements points for your first modeling agency application. Take care, that you are totally honest. More about: Take your own measurements for agencies, castings and jobs.

Why are model dimensions so important to get jobs?

Why are the measurements so important for models? You always have to imagine, there are many models. Whether a designer has his presentation in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Cape Town or even New York and Berlin, fashion collections are cut to a certain size, especially if they have been tailored for the next season and initially only on a few sample pieces to customers Fashion shows or showrooms are shown. These collection pieces are usually cut to a standard size, this standard size corresponds z.b. in high fashion a height of female models of 178 cm and usually a clothing size of 34 or 34, 36 (EU). Women should not be taller than 181 cm. For men, it is especially important that your body should not be over-trained. Why? So normal men can identify less with you. Men’s models should have a minimum size of 185 cm and a maximum height of 195 cm. If female models then wear high heels, the biggest differences are not too extreme. At a fashion show, all models are about the same size and nothing distracts from the fashion pieces.

The same is of course true for online shops, especially when it comes to the first parts of a collection, standard sizes are published. Whether it’s clothing, size S or M (US) or women’s footwear with a standard size of 36 to 38 (EU) for women and 42 and 43 (EU) for men.

Measurements for models for advertising

Those who only want to work in advertising, that is not in the field of high fashion fashion, for the dimensions are no longer so crucial. Here women can also succeed with a height of 170 cm or with a height of 183 cm. Even for men models, the dimensions are more flexible, advertising no longer requires the “absolute ideal dimensions” and the figure may also differ a little.

Requirements for Plus Size Models

Plus Size Models are really trendy. More and more fashion designers and creative arts directors are turning to curvy women in advertising. There is still a small difference between Plus Size Models and Curvy Models. Plus Size Models are models that are a little above the “normal” fashion model sizes, ie Plus Size Model are women who have a dress size of 38 or 40 (EU). Plus Size Models are great at working because more women can identify with them than they do with high fashion models. As a plus size model you can not only work for fashion customers, but also in advertising. This makes the job opportunities varied and so you can earn good money as a plus size model in the industry. You want to become a Plus Size Model? Then send us your application!

Curvy Models: Measurements and confection

Curvy models in women with a dress size between 42 and 44. Also, the cup size is much larger and can quite go to a G-Cup. Curvy models are just as popular as Plus Size Models because they appeal the most to the average woman. The average woman in Europe has a clothing size of 44. This means that even Curvy Models are only in average cut with an average dress size of 42 to 44. Even as a curvy model, we are very pleased about your application in our modeling agency.

People Models

The last section of the model revolves around those who have very special features. Extremely wild hair, tattoos, best agers and many more. As a People Model, you work mainly in the field of advertising, whether it is for a cereal commercial or for a comfortable mattress. People Models correspond to the normal look of everyday people. They have a special tooth gap, especially many curls or a striking and distinctive nose. Anyone who wants to work as a people model should not apply to a modeling agency, but to a special people agency. Where is the difference? People agencies work in advertising as well, the only thing they use less is fashion. As a People Mode you can also get hold of jobs in advertising, for online shops or classic advertising materials such as image brochures and catalogs.

Model measurements are as diverse as the job. There is a suitable agency for each area.

Competition! Advantages and Disadvantages for Models in the U.S.A

Advantages of a Big Markets:

  1. Exposure
You simply will not receive the same degree of exposure to other prospective future employers in a small market. Generally, smaller markets only offer commercial modeling opportunities. If you want to make a name for yourself, your only real option is to work in a big market.
  2. Opportunity
This one is fairly intuitive. A larger market has a larger demand for the same services. Working in a big market will simply provide more job opportunities in gross. The sheer number of advertising, editorial, and other marketing or content producing agencies in a big market create a larger demand for models.
  3. Money
This follows the previous two. Now, keep in mind, there are plenty of low-paying modeling gigs at every level and market. However, with so much demand and wider-reaching platforms, big markets are likely to have the biggest compensating jobs available.

Disadvantages of a Big Market:

  1. Competition
Not only will you have to compete for the same jobs with more people, many of them will have traveled to big markets for the same reason as you—better modeling gigs. This means that not only is the number of competition inflated, the QUALITY of the competition is also tougher as well.
  2. Scams
In smaller markets, where there are fewer opportunities for models to find work, there are subsequently fewer scams. Moreover, once an organization is discovered to be a scam, it is far harder to hide that fact in a small market. Unfortunately, with so many opportunities abound, it is easier for scammers to hide amongst the bustle and target naïve or new potential models.
  3. Criteria
With a glut of potential models, employers in big markets are able to have their “pick of the litter,” so to speak. This means that the standards for potential models become inflated with the inclusion of more competition. Thus, someone who may be a great candidate for modeling in a small market may not find the same opportunity in a bigger one.

How to become a model at 14 years: School first!

If you want to become a model at 14, that is quite a good age to start. Normally at this age you are still in school, so you have 3-4 years to take a look in to the model world and do smaller jobs on the weekend or during your holidays. You have enough time to see if this is really the right thing for you and if you can imagin to continue modelling after school. At the time you are about 17-18, you will be ready to work as a professional model and will already have a model book, with great pictures. Most of the best Models all over the world started in the age of 14-16. Not every “normal” agency takes models with the age of 14, most of them start to take models with the age of 15+. If so you can apply in a children modelling agency or just take a year to take care of yourself, try somethings and practise for your future modelling jobs. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

You want to become a model at 14?

Plaintext. Become a model with 14 years

To become a model at the age of 14 is actually very difficult. Especially because you still have to concentrate on the school. Having good grades will help you in your entire life, even if you later have to calculate your fees as a model and z.b. Once you understand the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. In addition there are many other questions, as well as a good language training, so that you also in commercials, with speech, fits perfectly. It is also about foreign languages but also geographic knowledge. Do you want to be in a small talk with a customer “stupid” or ignorant? Assuming you speak about Asia and cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai or Tokyo, then it would be perfect if you can say a little bit about it as well. That’s why the school is so important to you, whether it’s your own language, a foreign language, math or geography. So you are perfectly prepared to work internationally as a model later.

Dream job modeling: build-up phase at a young age

If you still want to apply in a modeling agency, then you should make sure that they talk to your parents first. You should always be aware of your plans, because at the latest the agency wants to talk to your parents when you are only 14 years old. Being a model means more than just waiting for jobs, first you have to build up your model portfolio. In other words, you will have many test shoots with photographers to help you gradually collect footage. It does not depend on the amount of photos but on the quality of the photographer. If you apply for a good modeling agency at the age of 14, from the beginning you will only get to the best photographers in your city and in your state.

After the first model castings and jobs comes

After your model kit is set up, you will get the first jobs. Here’s the next sticking point, if you want to be a model at the age of 14, you’ll need to take off from school. Here we come back to the good grades, the better you are in school, the sooner your school and your teacher is ready to give you free.

Too often you can not afford the luxury, because there are always new exams to you. So if you want to be a model early, you should definitely have a lot of patience for your setup. You will not be able to do most of the jobs. For many customer requests, you must first give an option. An option means you are free this day. Will you be booked then, the job starts. However, if another model is booked, the day is free again and you do not have the job. If you have to get rid of the school every time, but only get one in four jobs, the school will eventually stop playing – understandably. That’s why you need a professional and experienced modeling agency, she knows exactly which jobs she plays for you and which not.

You see, becoming a model at the age of 14 is not that easy, so be sure to be patient! It is best to wait until you are 15 or 16 years old, then the school will be over in the foreseeable future and you can concentrate fully on modeling.

Minimum measurements for models

As you can read in our article requirements for models, minimum dimensions, you should bring as a model a height of 174cm. If you want to work internationally as a female model, you should even be 178 cm tall. Your height should not exceed 181 cm, male models start at 185cm. If you are wearing high-heeled shoes as a woman, you would already tower over the first men, but with 181cm you are already very tall. For male models applies as I said a minimum size of 185cm. The maximum size should not exceed 195 cm. Whether male or female model, you should have a slim figure, pay attention to your diet and do sports. And sure, there are always exceptions.

Models and Sports: Defining instead of hardcore training

With sport, you should not overdo it as a model, your muscles grow too much, you do not fit in the standard sizes. As a woman you should train in a very defined way, but as a man you should also make sure that your muscles do not get too big. Why is that? For one thing, you just do not fit into the standard sizes of fashion designers as just described. On the other hand, in the field of advertising, models are ultimately elements of advertising, so that people can identify with the person (you). If your body or your proportions are too standard, fewer people will be able to identify with you and ultimately fewer people will buy your customer’s product. So a lot of ambition and a bit of psychology or knowledge of human nature is part of the topic of modeling. Would you have thought that?

How to become a model at 13 years: Modeling kids

As you can read in our detailed article on modeling at the age 14, it is very important that you have time to model. As long as you’re still in school, you’re distracted by many other important things and you still can not concentrate on modeling. Our recommendation as a modeling agency, patience! Try to get good grades and be diligent at school. Because the more diligent you are and the better your grades are, the more freedom you get from your school when it’s time to graduate. As a model, you sometimes have to travel and spend a day or two on the road. Of course you can not go to school during this time, so it is very important that you have a good relationship with your school and your teachers. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

Wait until you are 14, 15 or 16 years old

Wait another year and then you can send your first model application. Depending on how long your school is, it’s best not to apply to an agency until the school is over 2 years old. During these two years, you can build your model portfolio in peace with test shoots by professional photographers. Test shoots are important to make your portfolio as diverse as possible. Ideally, you can show different facets of yourself so customers can introduce themselves to you in their clothing. At some point you will also do your first sports shoot, your first family shoot and your first fashion movie. With each step you become more professional. However, since the construction takes a lot of time, you should think well about when you start in a modeling agency. If you start early and then have no time or have to cancel frequently, it will not be very positive for your model agent and sooner or later he will prefer other models. So that does not happen, you should only go to a modeling agency when you are 14 or 15 years old and the school is over at.

What measures do you need as a model?

The dimensions for models differ depending on whether it is a job in advertising or in fashion. When it comes to fashion, the fashion designers are much stricter, here are fashion collections cut to a certain size and you should have this large in the ideal case. For women that means a minimum height of 174cm, even better 177 or 178cm. For men, a minimum size of 185cm, so they are on average ten centimeters larger than the women. More about dimensions for models.

How to become a model at 15: Agency, jobs and application

If you want to become a model at 15, that is exacly the rigth age. Normally at this age you are still in school, so you have 2-3 years to take a look in to the model world and do smaller jobs on the weekend or during your holidays. You have enough time to see if this is really the right thing for you and if you can imagin to continue modelling after school. Most of the best Models all over the world started in the age of 14-16. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

You want to become a model at 15?

At the age of 15, you will be very young, but you are getting closer and closer to your age, because it pays off to start as a model. If you have the dream of becoming a model you should always remember that you will also need a lot of time. First, it’s about your setup, you have to collect first experience as a model and also the first photos for your model portfolio. Your model portfolio should be as extensive as possible, so that customers can imagine exactly what they would look like for their commercial or photo shoot. Here is a small example, a customer is looking for a model that should not only look good but also be able to ride a bicycle. This sounds easy at first, but you have to deliver perfect posings in the moving motion and your facial expressions must fit perfectly, which is a great challenge, for which you need a lot of experience. A little further thought it could be a couple shooting, for a contact lens manufacturer, also here you have to harmonize perfectly with your model partner, so that everything looks authentic and honest.

Your first jobs: Showrooms, Onlineshops and Instagram

If you have achieved this, partly acting experience, it is a long way. But at the age of 15, you are slowly getting into the age when it pays to work as a model. If you want to start as a model at the age of 15, you’ll probably have your first jobs in showrooms. At such a showroom, fashion designers present their new collections. The invited guests are buyers of major fashion chains or fashion boutiques, domestic or abroad.

Showroom: Presentation of fashion in front of buyers

On such a showroom no photos or video are produced, you are only booked as a model to present the garments. The customer can make a direct impression of the cuts, fabrics and colors. Also about the processing and the body shape or fit.

Photo shoots for online shops, Instagram and commercials

Often you will also be booked for the first small photo shoots, z.b. for Instagram. In such an Instagram photoshoot, the customer books you directly to take 15 or 20 shots. Such shootings then take place twice a month instead of with different models. So the customer can always, that is every day, post a new photo. The models are different on each photo and so the Instagram channel comes alive. These are usually the first jobs.

Of course, as soon as you have more experience, the jobs would be much more demanding. From the online shop Shooting with 30 different parts to the commercial, where ultimately comes to a perfect second, in which you smile. The big challenge here, the whole set has to be right. If z.b. two models are booked and in addition 50 extras in a large location the a club, z.b. to promote a soft drink, then every moment must sit, that means every single actor must act perfectly. A second day of shooting is impossible, for personal and organizational reasons, moreover it would be very expensive!

You realize, the job of a model is really demanding! If you really want to be a model, then you need a lot of ambition and motivation, so you can compete with young models in the big competition. Your modeling agency or your management must always be able to count on you.

What does a model look like with the school?

The better your grades are and the more diligent you are in school, that it’s easy to get free for a day or two. In particular, if your teacher or your school hears that you’re working for a reputable client, like Prada or Dior, you’ll usually get free if your achievements are right at school. Therefore, it is very worthwhile for you to make an effort in school, here you not only learn important things for life, but you also get to know many friends. You should enjoy the time!

The advertising model – model for advertising & sales talent

Advertising model – A professional goal of many prospective models is to ultimately see themselves in an advertising film or clip on television or online. But also poster or print advertising is one of the fields of activity of an advertising model. For models, we as a model agency in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Cologne give a little insight! Not only the revenues for the model are higher than, for example, in the catwalk sector, but also the degree of awareness of a model can increase enormously through an advertising campaign of a successful company or brand. This in turn means that the model not only gains valuable experience for the future, but also increases the model’s market value. And seriously – who wouldn’t want to see themselves smiling off a huge poster? Or generally associated with an exclusive company or brand? But what exactly is behind the term advertising model?

Model Job Classics: Advertising, Advertising Posters and Advertising Campaigns

What does a good photo model or advertising model?

The term advertising model is a specific term for a model who is particularly active in the field of advertising, i.e. advertising posters, advertisements, advertising films, advertising clips or similar. Such models are also called commercial models. They have a pretty face (according to the social norm), look natural and have a good figure, but not too thin.

Advertising model – prerequisites and requirements

The size is not basically insignificant as an advertising model, but smaller models (e.g. at a size of 170 cm) also have a chance in the advertising industry. Whoever appears to be unthinkable on the catwalk can be just the right type in advertising. The girl or the boy next door, with a sympathetic aura? Perfect. A bright smile? Duty. After all, the customer should be able to identify with the models.

Maintained appearance – The A and O in the Model Business

Nevertheless, the model gives the company a certain image or should underline the already defined image of a company. To do this, the model must be able to identify with this company, and the other way around, the company must be able to identify with the model. In a cosmetic chain, for example, a photo model with impure skin and a non-symmetrical face is unthinkable. Also with a hair advertising model there is a basic rule: The model may not have broken hair. Thus, the exact type logically depends on the products and services to be priced.

Advertising models – What do you earn at all?

The profession of advertising model is particularly popular in Germany, as the payment for jobs is significantly higher than for fashion models, for example on the catwalk. For an advertising model, it is essential that it is represented by a model agency that starts with a high (justified) daily fee, as it is possible that subsequent jobs of this kind could be eliminated in the same product groups. After all, the model should represent the product to be advertised authentically. The recognition value of a model and a brand is decisive, therefore the faces of a large brand are reluctantly booked.

Professional advertising, advertising photography and commercials for brands

Advertising is a broad field of marketing. But what does everything underneath count? And why is advertising one of the best paid jobs in the model business? Besides poster advertising, flyers, catalogues, advertisements and general print advertising, advertising clips, both for TV and for the Internet, also belong to the range of advertising. With the instruments, e.g. the carrier media, companies try to polish up their image on the market or to set it at all. And quite deliberately.

The big brands their marketing strategies

Well-developed marketing strategies are behind an ultimately simple advertising measure that is disseminated by the media. The companies try to directly address their target group and to communicate with it on another level, also to influence it. This has the goal that the customers feel addressed, identify with the company and that the sales market finally increases. In order for the company to optimally achieve these processes, it is important to find the right models for the right advertising. Ultimately, it is these that bring the company’s message to the customer.

Prerequisites Claims on a model in the advertising industry

The demands on an advertising model are manifold. Not only the corresponding appearance, good figure, certain size and a pretty face counts. This is a prerequisite for gaining a foothold in the model business at all.

Self-confident, authentic and natural

However, success as an advertising model will only be achieved by those who unfold fully in front of the camera and work ambitiously on themselves. An advertising model must feel comfortable in his skin. No matter how many pairs of eyes watch exactly how you shave your legs, make a nut nougat cream bread or jump ropes. Also very important is the authenticity, you have to stand for the corresponding brand and at the same time appear real and natural, and a sympathetic charisma. Every viewer prefers the smart, bright girl next door to the arrogant prima ballerina. However, it is also important for the nice neighbor girl that she shows a natural self-confidence. A quiet little mouse is out of place in the advertising industry. The consumer should remember you and associate the product with your strong charisma. Because every person would like to be self-confident, energetic and positive. A radiant smile is as much a top priority as good skin and beautiful hair. Good body care is a prerequisite. But the absolutely decisive argument for the selection of an advertising model is the acting talent. You must be able to put yourself into a role and embody it with full conviction.

Casting Types For Modeling Jobs

For models, castings are the most natural thing on earth. For runway shows, commercials or online shops. But overall for big clients and campaigns, clients require them. At castings, people involved like photographers or managers, marketing and sales can evaluate who fits perfectly into the look of the campaign. For bigger castings, there are casting agencies hired. One of the most famous casting agency in United States would be Rolf Scheider. He is known from the TV show “United States’s Next Topmodel“and many other television appearances. One of the important persons of the fashion world, you might get to meet when making it to the bigger castings.

Castings! Your daily business in cities like NY, Paris, London and Shanghai

Dates for castings will be done in two ways. Either way that as many models as possible can attend or that only a selected number of models may attend. The bigger the job, and the more exclusive and small the pre selection is. The best jobs are only booked by the best agencies, when casting agencies are sure that only the best professional models will attend the casting.

In general castings will always take place centrally. In the United States, a lot of castings are in Los Angeles and New York. This is also where the big agencies are located. And therefore, it makes sense for models to move to these cities at a certain stage. Appointments can be really time consuming and castings may take a couple of hours. And if there are thirty models ahead of you, you have to get used to spending time with your smartphone. Be patient and wait. Lots of models even learn for school or university while waiting at castings or jobs. E-castings are more comfortable and easier. They are also done for bigger jobs.

So, let’s have a look at the different types of castings:

Types of castings

In general, you can differentiate between two categories: live castings and e-castings. Selected models send a self-made video for an e-casting, which has to comply certain requirements. That saves traveling, expenses, and organization. Live castings are more challenging. At model castings’, usually lots of different types are on location, not only models but also the team. Bigger castings are also full of helping hands and editors of magazines. You have to deliver what they ask, if it is a text you had to learn, dancing or acting. Gosees are the shortest form of castings. It doesn’t matter which casting you attend: every model wants the job and every model has a great book. You have to keep your self-confidence and charisma and doing all this without being nervous is really a challenge for younger models.

Gosee: The short type of castings

At gosees you have to capture the people with only a little effort. At castings, it is always about showing a natural image of you. You should not wear any makeup or too much styling when attending a casting. At gosees it comes down to your look and your measurements. You only get a few seconds to convince them. Even though you might bring your book or sedcard, at gosees that doesn’t really matter because there is not time to have a look at them. Therefore, it is important to be perfectly prepared. From being on time at the location to perfect clothing. And of course, never forget to be friendly and smile when introducing yourself. If you are meeting several people at the same time, look for one person that is standing towards you. Many models focus on one person in the jury that is directed towards them.

If somebody likes you and smiles at you and others might not be interested, just focus on the person that likes you.

Note > if you are standing in front of the jury: never greet them by handshaking. Nobody likes to shake the hand of forty of fifty people.

Castings are mass events. In particular for new faces, castings are always a reality check. From twenty to two hundred models – castings are a real competition. You feel as model yourself, that they are very attractive, have a perfect body, are talented and are nice models. So, if you are not getting the fitting or job after a gosee, don’t be so hard on yourself or sad. Gosees are mostly for runway jobs and agency model castings. It is a chance to compare a high number of models within a short period of time and to get a quick result. For clients and jobs, castings are better. At live castings, you will have to play scenes with other models and at e-castings you will l have to say some lines for a commercial.

Live casting: It’s up to you

If you are invited from your agency to a live casting, you have good chances of getting the job. You have already been recommended as model and the client has already made a selection. With this invitation, you have already passed the pre-selection. Live castings consume time and money, and only models that have convinced the clients with their pictures will be invited. The clients now want to see you live. At live castings, you get the chance to show more of yourself. Usually it is your acting that they want to see, whether it is for photoshoots, of you playing a role with other models, for commercials and even saying some lines. Maybe a shoe company wants you to speak about the shoe for two minutes and tell them about your day. Another wants to see some sporty posing. Another casting would be you at a party, having fun, dancing although it is early in the morning. You have to be able to deliver all that when requested at all times.

E-casting: Do it yourself

If you participate in an e-casting it is mostly about campaigns that are big. For example, an international company is looking for new faces and that is why they do castings worldwide. Usually within the capitals of the respective countries in Europe, but also worldwide. You will get clear instructions by your agency on how to prepare the video and how to make it.

The quality of the video is not so important here. Perfect light is more important than an expensive camera. You might have to make videos in the short-term or between jobs. You have to introduce yourself by name and as already mentioned describe your acting talent. The video will be sent to the client as onetake (without any editing) and he/she will make a pre-selection. E-castings are for bigger and/or international campaigns, but also commercials, shootings etc. With e-castings both sides save money and time. The final selection will then be booked or invited to a regular casting.

Preparation for your next model casting

How can you prepare yourself for a model casting? With gosees or live castings it is about convincing them of you – fast in order to get to the next round or fitting. For gosees or live castings a basic preparation is enough. Before we look at the details of your casting you should pay attention to these 9 bases and know them: simple clothing, no styling. For women a white top, black heels, simple jeans and bikini or nude underwear. Clothing has to be fit and tight so that the jury will see your body directly. That includes high heels, which you will put on before the casting. No make-up or styling. Men wear black pants, white shirts, and also no styling for our male models here. Bring your sedcard and model book with you. If you already had your first photoshoot your agency might have already printed sedcards and you should bring them. If you are standing in front of the jury you can leave your sedcard with them. When doing the selection later they will easily remember your face with the sedcard. Of course your book is also a pro, so bring it with you! You might not get the chance at every casting to show it to them (especially with gosees), but usually the clients take at least a few seconds to look at some pages of your book, at least the first ones. Read our checklist for the next casting: 9 important things for your next casting.

Briefing and dates: Make a checklist

Before you leave for your casting you will get an address from your agency. So always plan your travel in advance and you will not experience any bad surprises on the way and be on time. Again, we are getting back to being on time, like at the beginning of this book. Professional models always make a route planning. Clients and agency will expect you to be on time and trust is that is always paying off for you as model. Go to bed early enough so that you are fit and awake the next day. Grab a little snack before the casting so you are full of energy.

So now you know what to expect from a gosee or casting. With the right and proper preparation, you will increase your chances of getting the job. Which means, being fit and well rested, prepared, on time and bringing all the necessary stuff with you: clothing, sedcards and modelbook. The procedure is always the same. You will enter the room, there will be a jury sitting somewhere, you introduce yourself and wait for instructions. At the end, you leave your sedcard, say thank you and leave the room. The more castings you do, the higher the chances of getting the jobs for photoshoots, campaigns and so on. In the next chapter, we will take a look behind the scenes of a modeling agency. How are enquiries handled? How is a selection made? Enquires, scouting and booking: here you will see again how important it is to work well and to collaborate!

Take your own measurements for agencies, castings and jobs

How can you take your own measurements and make snaps yourself? You will learn this within a few seconds. With regards to an application at an agency and looking for an agency it comes down to your self-assessment. The awareness, which agency you fit in as type. If you want to be in one of the top agencies in order to work internationally top measurements (as already mentioned) are a must. If these measurements vary too much and the proportions do not fit the agency you should not apply there. You save yourself and the model scout time. Just apply at agencies in which you fit in and where you have a chance of being accepted. Which models work with the agency? You will find out by looking at the model board. In the model board you will directly see which types of models the agency represents and which measurements they have. Once you have found the perfect agency for yourself you just need one more thing: perfect pictures.

Agency standards: Snaps + measurements for models

Many models are asking: “How many photo shoots do I have to do in order to apply at an agency?” The answer is simple: none. As a new face you don’t need any pictures for your application at an agency. Model scouts and agencies are very well trained in their job. Their eye is very sharp and they only need some natural snaps from you.

Polaroids are easy to take. No posing, no styling, no extras. What you can make of a model with stylists and make up artists, the agency knows. It is more important to them to get a natural impression of you when you apply. Polaroids are not only important for your application. These snaps will accompany you throughout your entire career. They are the most important factor for a booking. You need polaroids for your agency and future jobs. That is why I dedicate polaroids an entire chapter of this book. So you know what is important if you are taking your fist snaps. How should you take snaps for your application? We will go through this step by step.

Do it yourself: Bust, Waist, Hips and Height

These are the measurements points for your first modeling agency application. Take care, that you are totally honest.

How to take your own polaroids?

Your first thought about snaps should always be: as simple as possible! For good snaps you only need your cell phone with a camera. Professional models usually take some snaps for the next job in their hotel room or even short clips for e-castings after a job or in breaks. This shows how “easy” and simple they are. Polaroids are clean pictures of your face and body showing different angles and facets, to give the agency an impression of you. You can take them yourself or with the help of a friend or your family.

Polaroids should be taken in front of a clean background with daylight, so that nothing can distract you. Try not to have any shade. This works very well if it is a bit overcast. No make up, simple clothes, tight like skinny jeans or leggings, and a clean top or t-shirt. Women should also wear high heels. One snap should also be taken in bikini or underwear. Same for men. So snaps in jeans and shirt, and underwear in order to show your figure. On one picture you should smile, and on the other you need a more clean expression. Very important: no over posing! The snaps should be simple and natural.

  1. Polaroids – in short:
  2. Light, clean background (ideal)
  3. Daylight, no shades (if possible)
  4. No make up
  5. Simple, tight clothing
  6. High heels for women
  7. Portrait and full body picture (also bikini/underwear)

Polaroids set: Be who you are!

A set is a recommendation. It is important though that you are shown in a natural way for the agency. From different angles and perspectives with daylight as you will see on the following pages. You should not pose too much on your polaroids. For the scout it is important to see you as natural as possible. Just imagine yourself standing in front of the scout life. You would also not pose then. Just be yourself, natural, look straight into the camera with a neutral expression. Modelling agencies will need following snaps from you:

  1. Snap of your face (front)
  2. Snap of your profile
  3. Full body snap (front)
  4. Full body snap (side)
  5. Full body snap back (to show the length of your hair)

If you are taking them with a friend you will not need more than twenty minutes. No styling no make up, just dark jeans with a white shirt (you have that in your closet for sure). Now you only need to take your measurements.

Taking measurements yourself

You have never taken measurements yourself before?

For your career up to date, measurements are just as important as polaroids. Your measurements are simply taken with a usual measuring tape. If you are unsure let somebody help you. Ideally, you only take your measurements in underwear, as they cannot be falsified in doing so. Every modelling agency needs four measurements form you: height, bust, waist and hips.
Height – stand tall with your back at a wall and mark the exact height. Fastest way would be with a friend and a book or cellphone and pencil. After you have marked the height, you only have to measure the distance to the floor.

Bust measurement

In order to take the measurement of your bust you need to put the measuring tape at the widest point and around your bust with tension. If you are wearing a bra, for the girls, take 1cm off the amount you measured (for a push up bra at least 2cm off).

Waist measurement

Measuring your waist is putting the measuring tape at the tiniest place and then around your waist.

Hips measurement

Again put your measuring tape at the widest point for your hip and then around your hip and back. Perfect modelling measurements for women are 90-60-90 (a reference).

Requirements of modeling: Height, age and measurement

But if you have these international measurements try everything to get into a great agency in order to have best chances to make it into the high fashion industry. You need perfect measurements, but does it all come down to this?

Height & proportions of a ‘standard’ model

Yes, exactly. Perfect proportions, perfect height and slim shape will make the difference. The classy model career of which every new face dreams of always comes down to height. There are just a few exceptions; maybe one out of thousand, and her/his feature is a unique look that makes her/him get it. 999 will fail. For international clients it is important that the height and measurements suit them.

Everybody knows supermodel Kate Moss. She has everything: a unique look, charisma and is very into her work. Additionally, she lives a very entertaining private life for the media and delivers the perfect story. Every modelling agency would be happy to get such a diamond.

But for most of the models, following rule applies: your career will come down to your height. By means of requirements of typical clients, you will see how measurements are expected in United States. What does a typical German client expects when he is looking for a model?

  • Height of the model (80 %)
  • Measurements of the model (70 %)
  • Look of the model (hair colour, length of hair, skin tone, … 65 %)
  • Recognition factor (10 %)

I will later give you an insight into a model agency! Model scouts and bookers will look at inter-competition of new faces when we receive client requests.

You see how huge the influence of measurements is for the final decision? But measurements are not set randomly – they represent the respective average of society. Therefore, we do have a maximum and a minimum, for example with height. Women have to be at least ten cm smaller than men. And here we get the perfect height for men. Clothing size will be set regarding “elegance”. In order to make the garments look good, fabrics and patterns have to float freely – and a slim body is the perfect canvas for that. Let us look at “elegance”.

Modeling means elegance: For fashion and products

The shape of a model is important to designers and her/his agencies, as it will present the elegance of a product. Clothing just looks better and more elegant worn by slim bodies. Proportions of the model have to be on point and will make the overall image of the presentation perfect. It doesn’t matter if it is a fashion show, a billboard or a TV commercial. We all heard about the famous “dream measurements” of 90-60-90 (hips/waist/bust). These three measurements are ideal if they are in proportion to the height. As a high fashion model in Milan or Paris they even might be too much. Your hips can be slimmer as a new face and also your bust. An 87-58-82 has good chances at castings in fashion capitals like New York or Shanghai. For male models, I added a subchapter and we will come to the special requirements for male models in commercials. But for now lets just stay with the ideal measurements for women.

Modelling below a height of 175 cm

If you are a female model and below 175 cm you will not have huge chances at castings for big designers. There are only a few exceptions. If you want to make a living out of modeling, you need bookings and not exceptions. For online shops, labels and commercials in your national market, as I already wrote, you will still have a chance with the right agency and a good book. You will get jobs and therefore, even as a smaller model it is important to take care of your fitness, keep a healthy diet and your own proportions. For example, if a model represents a product the height is not important anymore (as there are no visible variations between the heights). If proportions are right, which means if you are below 175 cm, you can have less than 90-60-90, the entire image is good. But PR and commercial agencies know that shorter models tend to get booked less and the payment is less. The more you fit into the image taller and more attractive, the easier it will be for you to get jobs.

Modelling above 181 cm

As there is a minimum for your height there is also a maximum. Female models above 181 cm will experience it more difficult to get jobs regarding the long run. On one hand you are taller than your fellow models, and sometimes you are even taller than the male models. Wearing high heels you are easily taller than most of the male models with a height of 187 cm. Even on the runway. The fashion collections are produced for the presentation at fashion weeks in a certain size (usually for clothing size 34, max. 34/36) and a height of 176-180 cm. Designers, teams and producers will have to change every garment if a model does not fit in the “norm” or would have to book all models taller so that the entire image is fine again. These are just two factors to describe why a certain height makes it difficult to model.

Slim models

The international rules of the fashion industry are stricter, as I already said. Instead of 90-60-90, they prefer 87-58-82 and that with a height of 176-180 cm. Fashion designers and agencies will consider presenting the products as perfect as possible when they are looking for their models. Fashion has to be presented in an elegant way!

Even more affordable brands always try to reach the level of high-end fashion in their advertisement. Whether exclusive or international label or startup: the model has to have a slim body so that the garments suit her/him perfectly. The more expensive and exclusive the product seems to be in the advertising for consumers, the easier it is to reach a higher price for the product or service. On the other side, that is a plus for you as model, because you can sell products by your look and posing and may earn good money in doing so. Even smaller or single advertising campaigns, and even for new faces, are paid within the range from four to five figures. Not for an entire week but one day, and buyouts will be on top of that. Buyouts are usage rights for the use and publication of images.

Do it yourself: Bust, Waist, Hips and Height

These are the measurements points for your first modeling agency application. Take care, that you are totally honest. More about: Take your own measurements for agencies, castings and jobs.

After this, you will have to find the right agency for you:

Types of modeling agencies: This is how our industry works

Before you put all your time into applications and finding an agency, let me advise you on which way you might want to go. Which goals are realistic and which agencies are suitable? We will talk about the different types of agencies later, but they can roughly be divided into three classes.

Agencies for High Fashion

They place their models in international campaigns, commercials and fashion. They expect perfect measurements, and in order to make it into a high fashion agency you will need the famous “total package”.

Agencies for Commercials

Models for national commercials and fashion. Good measurements and being versatile are a must for commercials.

Agencies for People

Models for advertisements. Measurements are not that important, the focus is on types and characters, and the spark that you bring. Before we enter the world of high fashion and commercials, let us take a quick look at people agencies. If you have a lot of tattoos or a very edgy look, your plan should not be to make it into a high fashion agency but rather do commercials. If you don’t have perfect measurements, don’t waste your energy on working internationally but look for a great people agency. People agencies place their models in almost the same commercials as model agencies but they are more into advertising. The measurements are not as strict as on the international market and the fashion industry. It is more about the type and character, people that consumers can identify themselves with and not high fashion models. Every national market, whether it is United States, France, Italy, the USA or China comes alive because of advertisements: food, insurances, banks, cars and much more. These markets are very profitable; therefore it is worth concentrating on agencies and a model book that suits you rather than going for high fashion.

Modeling: Reality vs dream in New York, Paris and worldwide

It is the dream of many young girls, women, boys and men all over the world: to become a model! Living the glamorous life, wearing expensive designer clothes, travelling to the most beautiful places of the world, knowing important people and looking extremely beautiful.

Become a model: Who would not want that?

But a modelling career is so much more than just being “pretty”. As a model you are also a businesswoman or businessman. There will be a time when you will have to think about accounting, buyouts, travel expenses and organising your schedule as well. Of course there is a chapter for that, in which you will learn how to register as a self-employed model and how to do your accounting and taxes. But let’s get back to the basics again! As in any other profession, it is the same in modelling – ninety per cent work, and ten percent looks and talent. Luck? Well, the famous timing and luck will evolve from your commitment. The more you offer and work, the more you will get back from it. Nothing will just come by itself. Nobody was born as a model (we are excluding children and celebrities from this statement). In the end, modelling is a full-time job, hard work, requiring discipline and passion. At best, a portion of cleverness and being smart. But most of all, a great body and steady improvement. Between the dream of being a model and reality of being a model, there are many years of hard work, but you get the chance of adding glamour to your life!

Which requirements do you need to fulfill as a model?

Those are the questions, which I will answer in the first chapter of this book in a very detailed way. For you, it is important to know which agencies suit your requirements and where you will fit in. By choosing the right agency, you will be able to find the right clients for you with your book. On your way to becoming a model, it is mainly about your mental skills, body requirements, knowledge about the different modelling agencies, the perfect application, high quality images, castings, jobs, fashion and much more. Now you will learn how to properly assess yourself.

What do you have to be in order to be successful?

Inner strength and belief will be vital on your journey. As a model, it is important to be strong and self-confident, even though you had a long flight the day before and checked in late at your hotel last night. Tiredness, stress, time pressure? Nobody should notice all these things when you are at a casting.

Yes – modeling is a job that demands lots of commitment and self-confidence. Motivation and ambition will define you as model for clients and agencies. You have to be communicative, be able to organize all your appointments, take care of yourself (your look and body), be able to be versatile at photo shoots, timely flexible and be able to take last minute jobs. Your character is as important as your physical appearance – both will define your success.

A model always has to show discipline, strength and persistence. Jobs are quite often exhausting and long. Even when not all scenes are done by the end of the day and you will have to stay longer. Tiredness and stress should not be noticed when you are a professional model. If you are able to prove all these skills, many more agencies and clients will continue to book you for jobs. Continuous bookings are important for the model and agency if you want to entirely focus on your job.

Models are under constant pressure regarding their competition. At live or at e-castings, competition is right there. Usually more than one hundred models are being casted. If you are committed and make it to the fashion capitals of Europe, the US and Asia, you will be sent to castings on a daily basis. You will get your list in the morning for the entire day, and in the evening you will have to work out in a fitness studio and get to sleep, living in a model apartment. You will be tired in the evening. If everything goes well for you, you will not only attend important castings, but also walk some fashion shows. As I already said – all this demands you trusting your skills and a lot of energy!

If you are starting as a model in Europe, United States or worldwide, good for you because you are already in one of the best countries for modeling at the beginning for your career. Everything is highly regulated and clear. Working hours are set between clients and agencies, and are often limited. Modeling worldwide: USA to Europe and Asia

As a model: Be thankful for that all the time!

If you are working as a model in Asian cities, many agencies will charge a higher commission (in Germany it is usually twenty percent, in Asia fifty), which is almost three times more than in Germany. The same goes for fashion capitals including Istanbul, where the conditions are worse at the beginning. Jobs are not paid that well, working hours might be ten to twelve hours, and instead of taking pictures of thirty looks, you will have to change into ninety different outfits.

Some tips for the first time as a model in New York:

Keeping it real and natural are the two magic words. These will attract the customers and the concept will be successful. Models “sell” commercials better. Therefore, jobs within commercials are very versatile: billboards, cinema spots, image films, online shops or social networks. All media comes alive because of models. Classic print media like magazines, image brochures, or interior design of stores in cities also take advantage of models and their attractive appearance. For all these media, it is vital that you are versatile likewise: facial expressions, gestures and your entire appearance. In short: clients and partners of the modeling agencies will look for an expressive face, convincing looks, great posture and coordination.

Self-confidence, reliability and being able to switch roles are three important skills for you to make your way into the fashion industry. Same applies to online shops, where you will have to smile constantly, or very demanding clients who expect perfection and pay for it. Especially with high fashion labels!

Self-confidence and strength

Many models start when they are young. Whilst others go shopping in the city after school, as a model, you will be at photo shoots, planning your next journey and have a lot of responsibility. You will see that later in your book. On set, you are working with different people, characters, and languages. You will travel a lot; have to find your way in foreign cities and most of the time, you will be by yourself.

Commitment and initiative

You will be asked a lot, and that is exactly the reason why you have to show initiative. It does not matter if it’s a job or a test shoot with a photographer. You have to bring commitment when planning your shoot, working on your book, doing your homework, meeting friends and engaging on social media. Test shoots and photo shoots will be done alongside with photographers and makeup artists in order to build your portfolio. They are unpaid and all people involved profit from the results.

Discipline and ambition

This actually includes a lot: regular sleep, no parties before important jobs/shoots, being on time and body care. You will also have to do a number of workouts regularly and maintain a healthy diet.

Charisma and effect

Your charisma is what makes you “unique”. People like you just for who you are. Be positive and open towards people, engage them at set with your energy and communicative manners just when the timing is right. As Buddha says: “Start each day with a smile!” This total package of measurements, looks, motivation and ambition will form the charisma of a model. Charisma will make you successful in the long run. Agencies, agents and clients will not only remember you for that beautiful smile, but also because you were friendly, sweet, easy going and were able to motivate the entire production team at the job. Charisma will always be your great help and make people love you, as well as add that extra spark to your pictures and videos. In a nutshell – your “daily business” as a professional model.

  1. Why does advertising need models?
  2. How many commercials do you see each day?

Advertisement always reinvents itself in order to stay interesting. Fashion, trends and ideas change every day. New ideas, new networks conquer the world via social networks like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. Faster than ever! Hence, advertisement has to redefine itself because with all this amount of information it has to stand out. With every new collection, new season and technical innovations, new products will be shot, lookbooks printed, commercials produced, and campaigns done. Productions and producers need fresh faces for the presentation of creations. Even products that have been on the market for decades get a new commercial, new designs and new features each year. Therefore, as a successful model, having worked for a while now, you have to know what you are doing and be great at it. If it goes well for you, you will make it from new face to full-time professional model.

Model measurements for catwalks and fashion shows

Fashion is always something special. Fashion lives on Being special! New fashion collections are regularly released by designers worldwide, every season. Not only major international fashion designers and retail chains are working. Even small fashion labels have to constantly present new designs and styles to their customers to gain their attention. So designers and fashion have to reinvent themselves time after time to stay interesting for consumers.

Shows in Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London

At the Fashion Weeks the new masterpieces are regularly presented. In Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London. In spring, summer, autumn and winter, people are always looking for new looks and trends. Almost all designers have one thing in common, they tailor their collections for tall, slender people as mentioned in every post to similar topics. The clothes are more elegant, fabrics unfold their full effect, everything looks more exclusive and high quality! Delicate figures make clothes and their possible price more expensive. Even if not all fashion brands work in this scheme, it’s the majority of the industry.

Dimensions for fashion show

Fashion shows and fashion presentations are subject to an unwritten standard. For female models, a dress size of 34 (maximum 34/36) with a height of 177-180 (176-181) cm is considered ideal at the beginning of the career. Your hip should be under 91cm. Men’s models usually have a clothing size of 48 (max 50/52) with a height of 185-192 cm. A tip here for men’s models: At the beginning of the career you should pay attention as a male model on a younger look. If you look too masculine in your early years as a model, you’ll quickly get a chance on jobs in the fashion industry and on casting. That’s why you should always go to Castings with a shaved beard as a male model in the first years.

Competition! Advantages and Disadvantages for Models in Europe

Advantages of a Big Markets:

  1. Exposure You simply will not receive the same degree of exposure to other prospective future employers in a small market. Generally, smaller markets only offer commercial modeling opportunities. If you want to make a name for yourself, your only real OPTION is to work in a big market.
  2. Opportunity This one is fairly intuitive. A larger market has a larger demand for the same services. Working in a big market will simply provide more job opportunities in gross. The sheer number of advertising, editorial, and other marketing or content producing agencies in a big market create a larger demand for models.
  3. Money This follows the previous two. Now, keep in mind, there are plenty of low-paying modeling gigs at every level and market. However, with so much demand and wider-reaching platforms, big markets are likely to have the biggest compensating jobs available.

Disadvantages of a Big Market:

  1. Competition Not only will you have to compete for the same jobs with more people, many of them will have traveled to big markets for the same reason as you—better modeling gigs. This means that not only is the number of competition inflated, the QUALITY of the competition is also tougher as well.
  2. Scams In smaller markets, where there are fewer opportunities for models to find work, there are subsequently fewer scams. Moreover, once an organization is discovered to be a scam, it is far harder to hide that fact in a small market. Unfortunately, with so many opportunities abound, it is easier for scammers to hide amongst the bustle and target naïve or new potential models.
  3. Criteria With a glut of potential models, employers in big markets are able to have their “pick of the litter,” so to speak. This means that the standards for potential models become inflated with the inclusion of more competition. Thus, someone who may be a great candidate for modeling in a small market may not find the same opportunity in a bigger one.
