The history of the magazine

Elle was founded in France in 1945. Elle is French and stands for “she”. The slogan of the magazine is “Si elle lit elle lit Elle” which translates as “When she reads, she reads Elle”. After the relaunch of the magazine in the USA, other countries followed suit. In Germany, the first Elle appeared in 1988, with Gloria von Thurn und Taxis and her closet as the theme.

Today, Elle is one of the world’s biggest fashion magazines, with 26 million monthly views worldwide.
