Lean modeling law: Thin models are banned in France

The debate about skinny models is constantly present in modeling agencies. When we drank our first tea in the office this morning, we saw in the mirror that now in France, skinny models are officially banned on catwalks and photo shoots. If you fall below a certain BMI and do not have a medical certificate stating that your state of health is compatible with your profession, you face severe penalties.

The Lean Model Act comes into force today. The decisive factor for the new French law is not a certain weight, but the Body Mass Index, BMI for short. The BMI is made up of body weight and height. The resulting number shows whether you are underweight, slightly overweight, normal weight, slightly overweight or directly overweight. The law allows men to have a BMI of 20, women a maximum of 19.

The body mass index (values for adults)

  • under 16 underweight
  • between 16 and 18.5 Slight underweight
  • between 18.5 and 25 normal weight
  • between 25 and 30 Slightly overweight
  • over 30 overweight

Those who do not comply pay high fines; almost 40,000 euros have been spent on it. Many modeling agencies in France complained about this law months ago and founded initiatives against it.

BRAX Store Opening – Fashion Highlights with Gala, Douglas & Co.

Can I get you another snack? Small delicacies and creative invitations: We were guests at the BRAX Store Opening in Cologne, presented by Douglas and Gala. Among others Frauke Ludowig from RTL Exclusiv and we, Cocaine Models were there. The little who’s who of the Cologne fashion and media world. Here is our Recap for the BRAX Opening in Cologne:

BRAX Store Opening

Isn’t it true that it’s far too rare to get letters? About two weeks ago we had a really nice invitation in the mailbox. With fancy stationery and a personal invitation. Slightly glossy paper, modern packaged in a semi-transparent cover and with beautiful handwriting. So much trouble, then still in Cologne, one says gladly yes! That’s why we were particularly pleased about the elegant invitation to the store opening right from the start.

Fashion Highlights for Men & Buffet

Around 5 p.m. we locked all the doors in the office, smoothed our hair once more and set off. After a short stop at the Asian’s, we continued directly on the way to the city centre (Breite Straße 1). Even from a distance, the large structure could be seen in the Breite Straße. Even in front of the store were large headlights, flash systems and various photographers. Of course, behind the red carpet there was also the obligatory photo screen with all important sponsors of the evening, including Douglas and the gala. After the friendly security man let us on the red carpet, we were also intercepted directly by the BRAX manager: Photos! Let’s go… a few poses for the gala and pure 200 square meters of fashion for ladies & gentlemen.

The Location

So after we posted well and passed the start with flying colours, nothing could go wrong anymore. Closing time. Network. Red wine. We quickly went on to the BRAX Store. Since there were already some people there, it was relatively full. Nevertheless, one thing immediately catches the eye: chic, elegant and stylishly furnished – was my first thought! About 60 invited guests gathered on the first and second floors of the new fashion store. Below is a DJ house and relaxed lounge music, behind him are shirts and polo shirts neatly sorted on the shelves. Women in colourful cocktail dresses are also entertaining themselves. Most male guests are in suits, classic, grey/black. To the left and right of us are small snacks, aperitifs and wine. Everything that belongs to a good shop opening. After a hard day’s work, everyone here is happy to relax a little, chat with colleagues and stroll comfortably through the new store.

The Highlights

BRAX has really come up with a lot, from high-quality letterhead with individual invitation lettering to your own Gala Magazine cover. Snacks for the guests (… and we all know that love goes through the stomach). Of course not only we from Cocaine Models were there, but also a few other people from radio and media. Among other things, Cologne actors were present and of course one thing should not be missing at fashion events in Cologne: The RTL Exclusiv Team. And so Frauke Ludowig and Kena Amoa were guests in the evening. The collections in the store are well chosen and mature. Just as beautifully draped for a first glance – so close to opening.

On the second floor there was a very special highlight…

So that every guest at the BRAX Opening can take something special home – of course also in their own model or advertising agency – a special highlight was placed on the second floor of the store! An extra photographer with canvas, flash systems & Co. The highlight: Each team could pose once for a gala cover. In only two minutes the covers were edited, cut and printed. Presented with a chic folder it was a really great idea! There was also a Douglas “refreshment stand” where you could try out all the new fragrances, from Hugo Boss to Gucci. We teamed up with some actors from the TV series “Alles was zählt” (RTL) and tried and found some great new perfume creations (but we don’t want to advertise here).

Only a few minutes later we took our Gala Magazine cover in hand and returned to the first floor of the store. Also here there was a lot to see, besides the DJ of course countless outfits, trousers, shirts and ties for the coming season. Isn’t it said, pictures say more than a thousand words? So here are a few impressions from the big store opening in Cologne:

BRAX – now in Cologne

There is now fashion for men and women on two floors with the latest trends and styles. BRAX in Cologne is easy to find, only a few minutes’ walk from the main station or from the nearby Appellhofplatz underground station. It is located in the centre of Cologne and can be easily reached by foot or subway. We wish you much success and thank BRAX for the cordial invitation.

The next date has already been set. Friday we go to Frankfurt am Main to see the Escada summer / autumn collection for the year 2015. Of course we will also take some pictures at the Escada fashion show!

Belle d’Opium


Yves Saint Laurent’s “Belle d’Opium” fragrance perfumed with scents of flowers and oriental is presented by actress and model Melanie Thierry. You can see them dancing in ecstasy in a hall. This conveys the sensuality of the fragrance.

Burberry x My Burberry


Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss present the flowery scented perfume “My Burberry” by Burberry. It is a kind of homage to the classic Burberry, the trench coat. The lid reflects the characteristic buttons of the jacket. The hand-tied knot refers to the fabric of the trench coat that is woven in England.

Chanel x Chanel N5


Top model Gisele Bündchen promotes Chanel’s “Chanel N ° 5” perfume. The essence of femininity, a timeless perfume, the women’s fragrance par excellence. The ad “The One That I Want” tells the story of a woman who strives to find time for everything and everyone – for herself, family, career and love.

Chanel x Coco Mademoiselle


For the song “This is a man’s world” presents the actress Keira Knightley the perfume “Coco Mademoiselle” Chanel. On her motorbike she drives through the streets of Paris for a fashion shoot and comes very close to the photographer, but then disappears only with the bottle “Coco Mademoiselle”. It shows the seductive and elegant effect of the fragrance.

Chloé x Chloé Eau de Parfum


Model Suvi Koponen promotes the fragrance “Eau de Parfum” by Chloé. With her natural beauty, grace and femininity she embodies exactly what Chloé wants to express. A warm, elegant and very seductive scent.

Giorgio Armani x Si Eau de Parfum


Actress Cate Blanchett introduces us to the fruity fragrance “Si Eau de Parfum”. Sì to dreams, Sì to love, Sì to life, Sì to yourself! The Italian way of saying yes. The fragrance and the spot represent the different facets of a woman: sensuality and rationality; Emotion and strength; Intimacy and size.

Rihanna x Reb’l Fleur


In this spot, singer and model Rihanna presents the fragrance “Reb’l Fleur” by Caroline Sabas and Marypierre Julien. A spot in which Rihanna undertakes a journey through a garden labyrinth and encounters her own dark side. An expressive perfume, both seductive and sensual.

Versace x Bright Crystal


The perfume “Bright Crystal” by Versace is presented here by top model and Victoria Secret Angel Candice Swanepoel. A refreshing and floral fragrance and is as radiant and sensual as a crystal.

Actor Charlie Hunnam and Model Doutzen Kroes present the perfume “Reveal” by Calvin Klein. Doutzen Kroes seduces the actor, which is supposed to show the erotic effect of the fragrance.

In this spot, Beyoncé introduces her self-created perfume “Heat”. It’s her first fragrance and it’s fair to say that he is just as spirited, sexy and self-confident as she is and also the spot.

Model Abbey Lee Kershaw promotes the sensual fragrance “Flora” by Gucci. A really beautiful spot in which the model sits on a flower meadow and feels the power of the fragrance. The fragrance seduces through the perfect balance of refreshing tenderness and beguiling flowery.

Actress Nicole Kidman presents in this spot the perfume “Chanel N ° 5” by Chanel. A breathtaking love story, to dream beautiful.

Male Model: How to become a model as a man?

How does a male model standout from the crowd? Sure thing: by the unique look and character! Customers are making their decision on whether buying or not buying based on the “special something” just like casting directors and advertising agencies, who decide which model gets booked. A great shape and symmetric face are requirements for well booked male models, who want to make it in the model business. At first it will be your look and it will be ideally younger, later more manly and athletic. As male model you should try to keep your younger look as long as you can. But in order to be successful and get booked a lot, you also have to make a positive appearance at your agency, at photo shoots, at casting or with your client. This can have different facets, like the spark in your eyes, edgy and unique facial expressions, or for example a little tooth gap, that makes your laugh so “special”.

Emotions are playing a vital role at photo shoots and commercial sets. If you are able to show emotions as model you are also able to show certain feelings towards the client, on the picture or in the video. Not only direct impressions but also indirect ones are making a male model successful. I will later tell you how you can affect your image as a male model by driving a sports car. It is important to the designers that their collections are being presented and convey the “certain feeling” for the customers.

Yes, “lifestyle” sells, as a lot of models are idols for customers. Male models have time to work out, travel a lot and eat healthy. With an increase of your fame, the selling of a “lifestyle” will become more important if you wish to work with high-end brands and international clients. This just shows how important it is for a model to develop an own individuality. Uniqueness is paying of within the course of your career. But you can also train a lot as male model. Certain walks, posing and a lot more. In every part of these subjects, there is something special for you. Your walk has to be very different to the women’s walk. Whilst they tend to walk sexy and move their hips, you have to walk more cool and stiff. Just one out of many differences. Pleasant charisma is the base of the modelling industry. A warm smile is also more important for male models than a six-pack.
