How to become a model at 14 years: School first!

If you want to become a model at 14, that is quite a good age to start. Normally at this age you are still in school, so you have 3-4 years to take a look in to the model world and do smaller jobs on the weekend or during your holidays. You have enough time to see if this is really the right thing for you and if you can imagin to continue modelling after school. At the time you are about 17-18, you will be ready to work as a professional model and will already have a model book, with great pictures. Most of the best Models all over the world started in the age of 14-16. Not every “normal” agency takes models with the age of 14, most of them start to take models with the age of 15+. If so you can apply in a children modelling agency or just take a year to take care of yourself, try somethings and practise for your future modelling jobs. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

You want to become a model at 14?

Plaintext. Become a model with 14 years

To become a model at the age of 14 is actually very difficult. Especially because you still have to concentrate on the school. Having good grades will help you in your entire life, even if you later have to calculate your fees as a model and z.b. Once you understand the exchange rate between the euro and the dollar. In addition there are many other questions, as well as a good language training, so that you also in commercials, with speech, fits perfectly. It is also about foreign languages but also geographic knowledge. Do you want to be in a small talk with a customer “stupid” or ignorant? Assuming you speak about Asia and cities like Hong Kong, Shanghai or Tokyo, then it would be perfect if you can say a little bit about it as well. That’s why the school is so important to you, whether it’s your own language, a foreign language, math or geography. So you are perfectly prepared to work internationally as a model later.

Dream job modeling: build-up phase at a young age

If you still want to apply in a modeling agency, then you should make sure that they talk to your parents first. You should always be aware of your plans, because at the latest the agency wants to talk to your parents when you are only 14 years old. Being a model means more than just waiting for jobs, first you have to build up your model portfolio. In other words, you will have many test shoots with photographers to help you gradually collect footage. It does not depend on the amount of photos but on the quality of the photographer. If you apply for a good modeling agency at the age of 14, from the beginning you will only get to the best photographers in your city and in your state.

After the first model castings and jobs comes

After your model kit is set up, you will get the first jobs. Here’s the next sticking point, if you want to be a model at the age of 14, you’ll need to take off from school. Here we come back to the good grades, the better you are in school, the sooner your school and your teacher is ready to give you free.

Too often you can not afford the luxury, because there are always new exams to you. So if you want to be a model early, you should definitely have a lot of patience for your setup. You will not be able to do most of the jobs. For many customer requests, you must first give an option. An option means you are free this day. Will you be booked then, the job starts. However, if another model is booked, the day is free again and you do not have the job. If you have to get rid of the school every time, but only get one in four jobs, the school will eventually stop playing – understandably. That’s why you need a professional and experienced modeling agency, she knows exactly which jobs she plays for you and which not.

You see, becoming a model at the age of 14 is not that easy, so be sure to be patient! It is best to wait until you are 15 or 16 years old, then the school will be over in the foreseeable future and you can concentrate fully on modeling.

Minimum measurements for models

As you can read in our article requirements for models, minimum dimensions, you should bring as a model a height of 174cm. If you want to work internationally as a female model, you should even be 178 cm tall. Your height should not exceed 181 cm, male models start at 185cm. If you are wearing high-heeled shoes as a woman, you would already tower over the first men, but with 181cm you are already very tall. For male models applies as I said a minimum size of 185cm. The maximum size should not exceed 195 cm. Whether male or female model, you should have a slim figure, pay attention to your diet and do sports. And sure, there are always exceptions.

Models and Sports: Defining instead of hardcore training

With sport, you should not overdo it as a model, your muscles grow too much, you do not fit in the standard sizes. As a woman you should train in a very defined way, but as a man you should also make sure that your muscles do not get too big. Why is that? For one thing, you just do not fit into the standard sizes of fashion designers as just described. On the other hand, in the field of advertising, models are ultimately elements of advertising, so that people can identify with the person (you). If your body or your proportions are too standard, fewer people will be able to identify with you and ultimately fewer people will buy your customer’s product. So a lot of ambition and a bit of psychology or knowledge of human nature is part of the topic of modeling. Would you have thought that?

Modeling with 16 years: All you need to know

If you want to be a model at the age of 16, then you have the perfect age to start in a modeling agency. Modeling agencies specialize in building talented youngsters, and you’re probably about to graduate at the age of 16. If you have graduated from school, then you have enough time to work as a model! Because it’s not just about jobs, as we wrote in the blog post about Model at the age of 15, you will also need a lot of time if you want to work abroad as an international model. Our modeling agency works together with many partners abroad and can therefore help you with an international modeling career, an unbeatable advantage compared to many modeling agencies. We work with renowned partners in New York, Paris, Milan but also in Asia in Tokyo and Shanghai. But for an international modeling career you need a lot of time, as just described. An ordinary stay with a partner agency abroad takes 45 to 60 days for you. During this time you work completely for the partner agency and for their customers. What is the advantage of working abroad?

International picture material for your model portfolio

If you work as a model abroad, you will come to photographers who have different styles and see pictures with a different eye. When you are back in your own country, these pictures will pop out of your model portfolio and you will see that you have international experience.

Also, it will come at some point, the better you are as a model, the higher your demands on photographers. At some point you will only work with the best photographers from your city, that’s not many, maybe 5 or 50, depending on whether you work in a German city like Berlin or in an international megametropolis like London. Most models do not come from an international megacity, but from smaller cities with 50,000 inhabitants or 100,000 inhabitants. There is not a single photographer with an international level here, so you need a modeling agency that can represent you nationally but also internationally. That’s the only way you can safely go the way that leads you to a profitable career.

You can already see how demanding the job of a model can be. We did not even talk about castings or test shoots or jobs with customers. Not only do you take care that you have a lot of ambition and motivation, you still have to make sure that you continue your education yourself. That’s why the school is so important to you! If you are ever in the small talk with international clients, photographers, make-up artists or stylists, then you should be able to keep up. What is happening in the US, what is happening in Asia? If you want to work as a model, then you definitely have to think outside the box and I also deal with other topics. At some point, maybe a shoot in the automotive industry or a moderation at a trade fair will be out of fashion for you. Then you have to be able to adjust spontaneously and flexibly to a new situation and a new topic.

Since you are 16 at the end of your school, you have the perfect age to start as a model. Last year, you can once again focus on building your model portfolio with local photographers. You can do first jobs as a model and gain experience first. If you have practiced for one or two years or have also done your first practical jobs, you are ready for foreign countries! Especially at a young age models are in demand abroad, because the faces are new and customers are interested in new faces. Who is new, is interesting! If you are an interesting guy, then apply to us at Cocaine Models!

Milan Fashion Week – From crazy Gucci Show to Gigi Hadid with Puppy

The designers of the official new collections, are often not only by art or z.b. Inspire music, but have their own muses. These are nowadays mainly models or stars and starlets. Not only models, but also life styles are a topic in fashion. Designers like Gucci want to use their fashion to express, transform, improve and sometimes highlight their positive sides or critique negative ones.

Every year, designers have to come up with new trends. To attract attention, they try to show the craziest things and most extraordinary shows. To make an impression, or to stay in mind, Creative Director of Gucci has come up with something new this year. Alessandro Michéle and his team showed an extraordinary fashion show in a room reminiscent of a hospital operating room. The Models that presented the collection were made up in various ways. Some of the models got a drawn monobrow and others walked down the catwalk with their own heads under their arms. From Models with horns to little dragons on their arms, Gucci has shown a mix of luxury fashion and a little freak show in his collection. The team tried to make the models look out of this world and somehow like fairytale creatures, but with a precision and a lot of effort to get a look that it looks almost real. Their message to show different and diverse looks, that are somehow freakish, defenitly catched our attention. Check the video from the show yourself.

The Tod’s brand is mostly known for making leather shoes, handbags and other accessories. This year they have shown their new collection at the Milan Fashion Week. The new fashion showed women’s clothing, in great muted and pastel colors such as beige, brown and cream. However, all the attention was on another factor. Gigi Hadid opened the show and like a few other models she was walking with a cute puppy in her arms.

Paris Fall / Winter: Chanel with chic Fashion in the Woods

Karl Lagerfeld is more than just the designer of Chanel. He defined and gave the Fashion the right style as amazing as no one else could have done after Coco Chanel. This Fall / Winter Collection of Chanel, he showed the clothes in a setting that looked like a wood. With leaves everywhere, trees and dark drapes coming from the ceiling, the Models walked down and showed pieces that defined the vision of the designs. Strong women with nice business dresses and beautiful pearls or gemstones on handbags. The Scenography was perfectly fitted to the designs and gave a nice insight look of the chic, classical and sophisticated look that Karl Lagerfeld sees with the brand.

Bottega Veneta Men and Womenswear – Großartige Mäntel und Stoffe

Model Julia Stegner opened the show of the new autumn / winter collection 2018 and 2019 Bottega Veneta. Among model asterisks like Caroline Trentini and Simon Nessman had a small catwalk comeback. The collection had the perfect look to express a great version of subtle luxury. If you look at the clothes, you can see the defined tailoring and good craftsmanship. The collection looks classy and looks expensive, but not with the typical features of the brand looks. These are beautiful dresses that you can wear season after season and look stunning but hidden and not intrusive.

Jeremy Scott or Moschino? Colorful Fashion: Faux Fur and Alien Looks

Moschino and Jeremy Scott. Jeremy Scott and Moschino. For those who do not know the brand and the designer, it is not clear which connection lies between the two. The designer Jeremy Scott with his eponymous brand is also the creative director of the well-known high fahsion brand Moschino. His fashion is known for bright colors and wild combinations. Moschino and Jeremy Scott go well together, the designer has sportswear and streetstyle covered in his own brand, and Moschino includes chic and sleek women’s clothing. The brand Moschino is like Jeremy Scott no gaudy color too bad, with the inspiration in Pop Art and the motto “Fashion has to be fun”, the designer shows the latest autumn / winter fashion. Unknowing viewers may have wondered why the collections are similar or even almost seem somehow identical. However, he showed a more elegant version of clothes in the Moschino catwalk show. The cuts, presentation and idea behind the collections did not look alike except for the colors: bright and expressive pink, blue or neon colors could be seen. Some models on the Moschino catwalk had pink and blue colored skin.Like strange aliens but with the famous “Jacky Kennedy 50ties Look” hairstyles. In the videos you can admire the great clothes and bags and be inspired by the looks that are “out of this world”.

Why are bloggers and influencer so successfull?

Bloggers have conquered the fashion world. Since the first 10 years ago on YouTube and the further development with Instagram about five years ago, the world of bloggers has changed dramatically. Before that, the first blogs were still websites, bloggers wrote daily or weekly about new outfit trends, make-up or styling tips. Thanks to the smartphones like the iPhone, good cameras and Instagram, you can constantly give new inspiration, without the need for elaborate texts. That’s what makes Instagram so popular! Whether it’s fashion tips for spring, summer, autumn or winter, styling tips for the evening or just a bit of entertainment from our favorite blogger in the stories.

First row in every fashion show: Fashion bloggers & Instagram Stars

Some bloggers reach over 100,000 people, some even millions, so they have an extremely important voice in terms of fashion and trends. Did you know that Vogue (Germany) reaches 120,000 people with each edition? Here’s how important Instagram has become for the fashion world. This has also changed fashion shows, today sit in the front row not necessarily celebrities and VIPs but especially young Instagram stars with their camera. They record the new collections, give an honest and immediate assessment and take their front directly and live on the shows.

New York designers swear by bloggers, and many bloggers are now releasing their own fashion collection, which they successfully market. It does not just have to be about fashion, other accessories work or perfume. Shirin David, one of the most famous German youtubers, sold her perfume completely after only three months. All without a big advertising budget, only through their followers. This shows how valuable bloggers are, even in self-marketing. More and more companies are working with you, not just fashion companies. More and more established companies as well as insurance or automotive companies are looking for bloggers to advance their own brand in a young target group.

How much do bloggers earn on Instagram, Youtube and online blogs?

The income of the bloggers differ in each case according to the network, that is, according to the complexity of the production, according to the frequency of the postings but also according to the private label, that is, the own fame. The better known a blogger is, the higher the likelihood that other bloggers or media such as magazines will take over their content. This, of course, gives the booking customer additional scatter effects and possible new customers.

An Instagram post brings about 10-15% of a YouTube video. But the Instagram photo is much easier produced. Anyone who has a written blog will also be paid by reach. Just like bloggers in social networks. For companies, Youtuber and written blogs are more interesting. On written blogs you can go to the left, these links then lead directly to the online shop and provide week after week for new sales. It’s the same with a Youtube video, the Youtube video is once successful, it once reaches many people in the coming weeks, months and sometimes even years. This makes YouTube and written blogs very interesting for customers. However, Instagram also has its market, in particular with regard to trends and the permanent presence of one’s own brand among a young target group. With 100,000 fans, you can already ask $ 1,000 per image, depending on the negotiation more or less. For a good YouTube placement, which means also permanently and not just a short moment, you pay as an advertising customer ever 7,000 to 10,000 $. Then there are not only the postings on Instagram, but also the stories. In addition, influencers or bloggers are often booked for events. A very simple example, a new fashion center opened or a new outlet center, but also restaurants, clubs and events are always hot on photos of bloggers.

How to become a model at 13 years: Modeling kids

As you can read in our detailed article on modeling at the age 14, it is very important that you have time to model. As long as you’re still in school, you’re distracted by many other important things and you still can not concentrate on modeling. Our recommendation as a modeling agency, patience! Try to get good grades and be diligent at school. Because the more diligent you are and the better your grades are, the more freedom you get from your school when it’s time to graduate. As a model, you sometimes have to travel and spend a day or two on the road. Of course you can not go to school during this time, so it is very important that you have a good relationship with your school and your teachers. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

Wait until you are 14, 15 or 16 years old

Wait another year and then you can send your first model application. Depending on how long your school is, it’s best not to apply to an agency until the school is over 2 years old. During these two years, you can build your model portfolio in peace with test shoots by professional photographers. Test shoots are important to make your portfolio as diverse as possible. Ideally, you can show different facets of yourself so customers can introduce themselves to you in their clothing. At some point you will also do your first sports shoot, your first family shoot and your first fashion movie. With each step you become more professional. However, since the construction takes a lot of time, you should think well about when you start in a modeling agency. If you start early and then have no time or have to cancel frequently, it will not be very positive for your model agent and sooner or later he will prefer other models. So that does not happen, you should only go to a modeling agency when you are 14 or 15 years old and the school is over at.

What measures do you need as a model?

The dimensions for models differ depending on whether it is a job in advertising or in fashion. When it comes to fashion, the fashion designers are much stricter, here are fashion collections cut to a certain size and you should have this large in the ideal case. For women that means a minimum height of 174cm, even better 177 or 178cm. For men, a minimum size of 185cm, so they are on average ten centimeters larger than the women. How to become a model at 15: Agency, jobs and application

If you want to become a model at 15, that is exacly the rigth age. Normally at this age you are still in school, so you have 2-3 years to take a look in to the model world and do smaller jobs on the weekend or during your holidays. You have enough time to see if this is really the right thing for you and if you can imagin to continue modelling after school. At the time you are about 17-18, you will be ready to work as a professional model and will already have a model book, with great pictures. Most of the best Models all over the world started in the age of 14-16. If you want to know more about modeling, check out become a model or the blog: become a model.

You want to become a model at 15?

At the age of 15, you will be very young, but you are getting closer and closer to your age, because it pays off to start as a model. If you have the dream of becoming a model you should always remember that you will also need a lot of time. First, it’s about your setup, you have to collect first experience as a model and also the first photos for your model portfolio. Your model portfolio should be as extensive as possible, so that customers can imagine exactly what they would look like for their commercial or photo shoot. Here is a small example, a customer is looking for a model that should not only look good but also be able to ride a bicycle. This sounds easy at first, but you have to deliver perfect posings in the moving motion and your facial expressions must fit perfectly, which is a great challenge, for which you need a lot of experience. A little further thought it could be a couple shooting, for a contact lens manufacturer, also here you have to harmonize perfectly with your model partner, so that everything looks authentic and honest.

Your first jobs: Showrooms, Onlineshops and Instagram

If you have achieved this, partly acting experience, it is a long way. But at the age of 15, you are slowly getting into the age when it pays to work as a model. If you want to start as a model at the age of 15, you’ll probably have your first jobs in showrooms. At such a showroom, fashion designers present their new collections. The invited guests are buyers of major fashion chains or fashion boutiques, domestic or abroad.

Showroom: Presentation of fashion in front of buyers

On such a showroom no photos or video are produced, you are only booked as a model to present the garments. The customer can make a direct impression of the cuts, fabrics and colors. Also about the processing and the body shape or fit.

Photo shoots for online shops, Instagram and commercials

Often you will also be booked for the first small photo shoots, z.b. for Instagram. In such an Instagram photoshoot, the customer books you directly to take 15 or 20 shots. Such shootings then take place twice a month instead of with different models. So the customer can always, that is every day, post a new photo. The models are different on each photo and so the Instagram channel comes alive. These are usually the first jobs.

Of course, as soon as you have more experience, the jobs would be much more demanding. From the online shop Shooting with 30 different parts to the commercial, where ultimately comes to a perfect second, in which you smile. The big challenge here, the whole set has to be right. If z.b. two models are booked and in addition 50 extras in a large location the a club, z.b. to promote a soft drink, then every moment must sit, that means every single actor must act perfectly. A second day of shooting is impossible, for personal and organizational reasons, moreover it would be very expensive!

You realize, the job of a model is really demanding! If you really want to be a model, then you need a lot of ambition and motivation, so you can compete with young models in the big competition. Your modeling agency or your management must always be able to count on you.

What does a model look like with the school?

The better your grades are and the more diligent you are in school, that it’s easy to get free for a day or two. In particular, if your teacher or your school hears that you’re working for a reputable client, like Prada or Dior, you’ll usually get free if your achievements are right at school. Therefore, it is very worthwhile for you to make an effort in school, here you not only learn important things for life, but you also get to know many friends. You should enjoy the time!

If you still want to be a model …

Requirements of modeling: Height, age and measurement

Model Measurements & Body Size – The classic model career every up-and-coming model dreams of almost always depends exclusively on the model’s body size. There are only a few exceptions, perhaps one in a thousand, who made it anyway due to their special nature. Everybody knows supermodel Kate Moss. She combines everything: a special look, a special charisma and she is always extremely committed to her work. In addition, she leads a very interesting private life for the media and thus also the right story.

Why are model dimensions so crucial for jobs?

Why are measurements so important for models? You always have to imagine there are many models. No matter if a designer has his presentation in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Cape Town or also New York and Berlin, fashion collections are cut to a certain size, especially if they have been tailor-made for the next season and are first shown to customers at fashion shows or in showrooms with a few sample pieces. These collection pieces are usually cut to a standard size, this standard size corresponds e.g. with High Fashion to a body size with female models of 178 cm and as a rule a confection size of 34 or 34, 36 (EU). Women should not be taller than 181 cm. For men, it is especially important that your body is not too well trained. What’s the matter with you? It makes it harder for normal men to identify with you. Male models should have a minimum size of 185 cm and a maximum size of 195 cm. When female models wear high heels, the biggest differences are not too extreme. At a fashion show then all models are about the same size and nothing distracts from the fashion has pieces.

The same applies of course to online shops, especially when it comes to the first pieces of a collection, standard sizes are issued. Whether it is clothing, size S or M (US), or standard size shoes from 36 to 38 (EU) for women and 42 or 43 (EU) for men.

Dimensions & Sizes at a glance: National and International

Before we go into detail, these are the general “standards” for 95% of all jobs. The closer you are to these dimensions, the better the conditions – apart from personality.

  • Women
    Body size for Fashion: 176 – 180cm / International
    Body size for advertising: 172 – 181cm / Germany
    Slim figure, usually long hair
  • men
    Body size for Fashion: 186 – 190cm / International
    Body size for advertising: 184 – 194cm / Germany
    Slim or slightly sporty figure

Dimensions for models for advertising

If you only want to work in advertising, i.e. not in the field of high fashion fashion, the dimensions are no longer so decisive for you. Here women with a height of 170 cm can have success as well as with a height of 183 cm. Also for men models the measures are more flexible, advertisement does not require any more the “absolute ideal measures” and the figure can deviate also a little bit.

Prerequisites for Plus Size Models

Plus Size Models are really trendy. More and more fashion designers and creative arts directors are turning to curvaceous women in advertising. There is a small difference between Plus Size Models and Curvy Models. Plus Size Models are models that are a little above the “normal” fashion model sizes, i.e. Plus Size Models are women who have a clothing size of 38 or 40 (EU). Plus Size models can do a great job because more women can identify with them as they do with high fashion models. As a Plus Size Model you can therefore not only work for fashion customers, but also in advertising. That makes the job opportunities varied and so you can earn good money as a Plus Size Model in the industry. You want to be a Plus Size Model? Then send us your application!

Curvy Models: Dimensions and fabrication

Curvy models in women with a clothing size between 42 and 44. Also the cup size is much bigger and can go up to a G-Cup. Curvy Models are as popular as Plus Size Models, as they are most appealing to the average woman. The average woman in Europe has a clothing size of 44, which means that even Curvy models with an average clothing size of 42 to 44 are only generally average. Also as Curvy Model we are very happy about your application in our model agency.

People Models

The last part of the model’s section revolves around those who have very special traits. Extremely wild hair, tattoos, best agers and many more. As a people model you work mainly in the advertising sector, whether it is for a muesli commercial or for a comfortable mattress. People Models correspond to the normal look of everyday people. You have a special gap in your teeth, a lot of curls or a conspicuous and striking nose. If you want to work as a people model, you should not apply in a model agency but in a special people agency. What’s the difference? People agencies also work in advertising, the only thing they serve less is the field of fashion. But as a People Mode you can also get jobs in advertising, for online shops or even classic advertising materials such as image brochures and catalogs.

Model dimensions are as varied as the job itself. There is a suitable agency for every area.

In fact! Body size makes the difference in jobs for models

Every model agency is happy about such a diamond. For most people, however, the rule remains the same: Your modeling career is almost always decided on the basis of body size. When we go through applications in the agency, the first information displayed is not name or your residence, first we see the height. Of course, we always take a look at the photos. But as a smaller model you always need the special, international look or a finished model folder. For international customers, the body and clothing size of the models is particularly important. But first we look at what a typical customer from Germany attaches importance to in his inquiry.

Basically, the following specifications are usually given by the customer for the model agency:

  1. body size of the model (80% of the requests)
  2. Model’s clothing size (70% of requests)
  3. Looks of the model (hair length, hair color, skin tone, etc. to 65% of inquiries)
  4. Recognition value (only 10% of the requests)

Elegant presentation of fashion requires slim bodies

Elegance – In order for products to be presented elegantly, the figure of the model is crucial for fashion designers and their agencies. The proportions of the model must be right so that the overall presentation is right. Whether fashion show, advertising poster or commercial. Clothing looks much more elegant on slim bodies. We all know the famous “dream measurements” of 90-60-90 (hip/waist/breast). These three measures are considered ideal if they are in proportion to the body size.

As a high fashion model in Milan or Paris this is often too much. Your hip may be New Face gladly still narrower, also the chest. An 87-58-82 (H/T/B) has a good chance at casting in the fashion capitals.

Small models have less chances of getting big jobs

You don’t stand a chance as a woman at castings in fashion cities under 175cm. If you are smaller than 175 cm, you will unfortunately have no chance in the castings of the big designers. For online shops, labels and advertising in the national market, you still have the chance to get jobs, so it’s worth it, even as a smaller model, if you pay attention to your proportions. For example, if a product is presented by a person, not a group, body size is much less important. If the proportions are right and you have less than 90-60-90 at less than 175cm, the overall picture is right. However, PR and advertising agencies know that you tend to be less booked as a smaller model, so the fees are slightly lower. The sooner you are a model the scheme is: big and attractive, the easier it is for you.

Over 181cm it becomes again more difficult as a woman. Just as there are limits at the bottom, there are also limits at the top. Female models over 181 cm have it again more difficult. For one thing, you’re bigger than your colleagues. But you are also often taller than your male colleagues. With high heels you are as tall as most boys with 187 cm. Even on the catwalk. The fashion collections are only produced in one size for the first presentation. Mostly for dress size 34 (max. 34/36) at 175-179cm. Designers, teams and producers would have to change every single piece or book all models larger.

These are just two factors to describe why it becomes difficult to model successfully at a certain height. Nevertheless, you have good chances in the national advertising markets, for example in people agencies. They often have jobs very similar to model agencies: commercials, fairs & co. In every big city there are people agencies.

Advertising effect of elegance for brands of all kinds

In the international fashion industry, the rules are much stricter, as mentioned earlier. Instead of 90-60-90 it can be 87-58-82. Fashion designers as well as agencies are looking for models to present their products as high as possible. The higher the quality and more exclusive the product is to the consumer in the commercial or from the poster, the easier it is to justify a high price for the product or service. Therefore, as a good model who can sell products through looks and poses, you can also earn a lot of money. Even for individual advertising campaigns, four and five-digit amounts are quickly possible for one-day advertising productions, even for “new faces”. Why does advertising need models for events, photos and videos? Read more here: Advertising and its function in marketing.

Expensive or cheap: fashion must be presented elegantly

Even cheaper labels always try to reach the level of high-priced labels in advertising. Whether exclusive, international label or fashion startup, the model must have a slim body so that the garments fall optimally, no wrinkles throw and fit perfectly. This applies to all fashion metropolises and models in New York, Paris, London and Milan.

Fashion is always something special. Fashion thrives on being special! New fashion collections are regularly launched by designers worldwide, every season. Not only major international fashion designers and retail chains work in this way. Even small fashion labels have to constantly present their customers with new designs and cuts to attract their attention. So designers and fashion have to reinvent themselves again and again in order to remain interesting for consumers.

Curvy Model: Supersize models become more and more popular

Never before have they been so in demand – Curvy Models. Personality instead of “ideal measures”. The curves of the 50’s and together with the still prevailing size 0 models bring the next development in the fashion world, the Curvy Model. It is important to note this: Curvy isn’t just lazy and fast food. Nutrition is the A&O of every model, because you don’t want to lose your sporty curves. The market for Curvys is growing steadily and is being sought everywhere.

Shows in Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London

The new masterpieces are regularly presented at the Fashion Weeks. Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London. In spring, summer, autumn and winter people are always looking for new looks and trends. Almost all designers have one thing in common: they tailor their collections for tall, slim people. The clothes fall more elegantly, fabrics unfold their full effect, everything looks more exclusive and higher quality! Gracile figures make clothes and their possible price more expensive. Even if not all fashion brands work in this scheme, it is still the majority of the industry.

Fashion show dimensions

Fashion shows and fashion presentations are subject to an unwritten norm. For female models, a clothing size of 34 (max. 34/36) with a body size of 177-180 (176-181) cm is considered ideal at the beginning of their career. Your hip should be under 5 inches. For men models there is usually a clothing size of 48 (max. 50/52) with a body size of 185-192 cm. Here’s a tip for male models: At the beginning of your career, as a male model you should also pay attention to a younger look. If you already look too masculine in your first years as a model, you’ll quickly get a chance for jobs in the fashion industry and at castings. That’s why you as a male model should always go to castings with a shaved beard during the first years.

Model Coaching Days – How our models learn

Here you can see one of our last Model Coaching Days (exclusively for our models).

Modeling: Reality vs dream in New York, Paris and worldwide

It is the dream of many young girls, women, boys and men all over the world: to become a model! Living the glamorous life, wearing expensive designer clothes, travelling to the most beautiful places of the world, knowing important people and looking extremely beautiful.

Become a model: Who would not want that?

But a modelling career is so much more than just being “pretty”. As a model you are also a businesswoman or businessman. There will be a time when you will have to think about accounting, buyouts, travel expenses and organising your schedule as well. Of course there is a chapter for that, in which you will learn how to register as a self-employed model and how to do your accounting and taxes. But let’s get back to the basics again! As in any other profession, it is the same in modelling – ninety per cent work, and ten percent looks and talent. Luck? Well, the famous timing and luck will evolve from your commitment. The more you offer and work, the more you will get back from it. Nothing will just come by itself. Nobody was born as a model (we are excluding children and celebrities from this statement). In the end, modelling is a full-time job, hard work, requiring discipline and passion. At best, a portion of cleverness and being smart. But most of all, a great body and steady improvement. Between the dream of being a model and reality of being a model, there are many years of hard work, but you get the chance of adding glamour to your life!

Which requirements do you need to fulfill as a model?

Those are the questions, which I will answer in the first chapter of this book in a very detailed way. For you, it is important to know which agencies suit your requirements and where you will fit in. By choosing the right agency, you will be able to find the right clients for you with your book. On your way to becoming a model, it is mainly about your mental skills, body requirements, knowledge about the different modelling agencies, the perfect application, high quality images, castings, jobs, fashion and much more. Now you will learn how to properly assess yourself.

What do you have to be in order to be successful?

Inner strength and belief will be vital on your journey. As a model, it is important to be strong and self-confident, even though you had a long flight the day before and checked in late at your hotel last night. Tiredness, stress, time pressure? Nobody should notice all these things when you are at a casting.

Yes – modeling is a job that demands lots of commitment and self-confidence. Motivation and ambition will define you as model for clients and agencies. You have to be communicative, be able to organize all your appointments, take care of yourself (your look and body), be able to be versatile at photo shoots, timely flexible and be able to take last minute jobs. Your character is as important as your physical appearance – both will define your success.

A model always has to show discipline, strength and persistence. Jobs are quite often exhausting and long. Even when not all scenes are done by the end of the day and you will have to stay longer. Tiredness and stress should not be noticed when you are a professional model. If you are able to prove all these skills, many more agencies and clients will continue to book you for jobs. Continuous bookings are important for the model and agency if you want to entirely focus on your job.

Models are under constant pressure regarding their competition. At live or at e-castings, competition is right there. Usually more than one hundred models are being casted. If you are committed and make it to the fashion capitals of Europe, the US and Asia, you will be sent to castings on a daily basis. You will get your list in the morning for the entire day, and in the evening you will have to work out in a fitness studio and get to sleep, living in a model apartment. You will be tired in the evening. If everything goes well for you, you will not only attend important castings, but also walk some fashion shows. As I already said – all this demands you trusting your skills and a lot of energy!

If you are starting as a model in Europe, United States or worldwide, good for you because you are already in one of the best countries for modeling at the beginning for your career. Everything is highly regulated and clear. Working hours are set between clients and agencies, and are often limited. You will not only get paid for the working hours, but also for any overtime you do. Your payment is quite high from the very beginning, because they are set by the agency. Additionally, you will receive buyouts. Buyouts are extra payments for usage rights, for example, if a commercial is shown for more than a year on TV or in other countries. A lot of booking details are in your favor if you are staring your career in Germany. Luxury in our country is also at the set you are working at. Production teams are very friendly and usually take care of the models and make you feel comfortable. It starts with friendly greetings throughout to healthy and great catering. You will experience a very regulated and nice atmosphere.

Modeling worldwide: USA to Europe and Asia

As a model: Be thankful for that all the time!

If you are working as a model in Asian cities, many agencies will charge a higher commission (in Germany it is usually twenty percent, in Asia fifty), which is almost three times more than in Germany. The same goes for fashion capitals including Istanbul, where the conditions are worse at the beginning. Jobs are not paid that well, working hours might be ten to twelve hours, and instead of taking pictures of thirty looks, you will have to change into ninety different outfits.

Mental strength and charisma in major cities like New York

Clients want to sell their products and services via commercials to their customers, and in doing so they are using models. It is a mix of perfect portraying of emotions and the range of the commercial and the model itself. Emotions come to life by the charisma of the model. Therefore, it is important that you arrive at a set self-confident. It will show in your charisma. By loving what you are doing, the respective result will be achieved. Hence, for modeling agencies and agents, it is important that female and male models feel well in their skin. As a model, you have to be able to switch roles at sets in order to sell the customer the product or service. Read more about New York:

All about New York

Some tips for the first time as a model in New York:

Keeping it real and natural are the two magic words. These will attract the customers and the concept will be successful. Models “sell” commercials better. Therefore, jobs within commercials are very versatile: billboards, cinema spots, image films, online shops or social networks. All media comes alive because of models. Classic print media like magazines, image brochures, or interior design of stores in cities also take advantage of models and their attractive appearance. For all these media, it is vital that you are versatile likewise: facial expressions, gestures and your entire appearance. In short: clients and partners of the modeling agencies will look for an expressive face, convincing looks, great posture and coordination.

Self-confidence, reliability and being able to switch roles are three important skills for you to make your way into the fashion industry. Same applies to online shops, where you will have to smile constantly, or very demanding clients who expect perfection and pay for it. Especially with high fashion labels!

Self-confidence and strength

Many models start when they are young. Whilst others go shopping in the city after school, as a model, you will be at photo shoots, planning your next journey and have a lot of responsibility. You will see that later in your book. On set, you are working with different people, characters, and languages. You will travel a lot; have to find your way in foreign cities and most of the time, you will be by yourself.

Commitment and initiative

You will be asked a lot, and that is exactly the reason why you have to show initiative. It does not matter if it’s a job or a test shoot with a photographer. You have to bring commitment when planning your shoot, working on your book, doing your homework, meeting friends and engaging on social media. Test shoots and photo shoots will be done alongside with photographers and makeup artists in order to build your portfolio. They are unpaid and all people involved profit from the results.

Discipline and ambition

This actually includes a lot: regular sleep, no parties before important jobs/shoots, being on time and body care. You will also have to do a number of workouts regularly and maintain a healthy diet.

Charisma and effect

Your charisma is what makes you “unique”. People like you just for who you are. Be positive and open towards people, engage them at set with your energy and communicative manners just when the timing is right. As Buddha says: “Start each day with a smile!” This total package of measurements, looks, motivation and ambition will form the charisma of a model. Charisma will make you successful in the long run. Agencies, agents and clients will not only remember you for that beautiful smile, but also because you were friendly, sweet, easy going and were able to motivate the entire production team at the job. Charisma will always be your great help and make people love you, as well as add that extra spark to your pictures and videos. In a nutshell – your “daily business” as a professional model.

  1. Why does advertising need models?
  2. How many commercials do you see each day?

Advertisement always reinvents itself in order to stay interesting. Fashion, trends and ideas change every day. New ideas, new networks conquer the world via social networks like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. Faster than ever! Hence, advertisement has to redefine itself because with all this amount of information it has to stand out. With every new collection, new season and technical innovations, new products will be shot, lookbooks printed, commercials produced, and campaigns done. Productions and producers need fresh faces for the presentation of creations. Even products that have been on the market for decades get a new commercial, new designs and new features each year. Therefore, as a successful model, having worked for a while now, you have to know what you are doing and be great at it. If it goes well for you, you will make it from new face to full-time professional model.

Model measurements for catwalks and fashion shows

Fashion is always something special. Fashion lives on Being special! New fashion collections are regularly released by designers worldwide, every season. Not only major international fashion designers and retail chains are working. Even small fashion labels have to constantly present new designs and styles to their customers to gain their attention. So designers and fashion have to reinvent themselves time after time to stay interesting for consumers.

Shows in Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London

At the Fashion Weeks the new masterpieces are regularly presented. In Milan, New York, Paris, Hong Kong and London. In spring, summer, autumn and winter, people are always looking for new looks and trends. Almost all designers have one thing in common, they tailor their collections for tall, slender people as mentioned in every post to similar topics. The clothes are more elegant, fabrics unfold their full effect, everything looks more exclusive and high quality! Delicate figures make clothes and their possible price more expensive. Even if not all fashion brands work in this scheme, it’s the majority of the industry.

Dimensions for fashion show

Fashion shows and fashion presentations are subject to an unwritten standard. For female models, a dress size of 34 (maximum 34/36) with a height of 177-180 (176-181) cm is considered ideal at the beginning of the career. Your hip should be under 91cm. Men’s models usually have a clothing size of 48 (max 50/52) with a height of 185-192 cm. A tip here for men’s models: At the beginning of the career you should pay attention as a male model on a younger look. If you look too masculine in your early years as a model, you’ll quickly get a chance on jobs in the fashion industry and on casting. That’s why you should always go to Castings with a shaved beard as a male model in the first years.

Measure yourself!

These are the measurements points for your first modeling agency application. Take care, that you are totally honest. More about: Take your own measurements for agencies, castings and jobs.

Model Lea in America – Working and Living in New York & Miami

America – the dream of many, especially models. Lea made it: She got to know modeling in the USA.

“The American Dream” – Lea got to know him

We talked to her and she told us beautiful and exciting details of her journey.

Why did you go to America?

“That was totally spontaneous. I decided to fly to the USA just two days before the trip. It has always been a dream of mine to see America. When winter really started and everything got stressful, I decided to visit friends in Miami.”

How long were you there?

“The plan was a three-week vacation. “In the end, it was six months.”

Where were you in the USA?

“I stayed in Miami for the first four months. Then I went to Chicago and spent the last two months in New York.”
The modeling in NY & Miami

Where did you live?

“In Miami I lived in a model house and in New York with friends I met during my stay there.”

What kind of jobs did you do?

“Very different. Starting with catalogue jobs, online stuff and editorial.”

What was your best experience in Miami or New York?

“The whole trip, actually. I met so many great new people from all over the world. That was the best part.”

How is the model market in America?

“It’s not really hard to get a foothold in Miami. It doesn’t matter if you are New Face or already professional. All agencies get the same castings, which means everyone has the same chance as a model, regardless of the agency you are in. It’s different in New York. The Modelling Agency plays an important role here. “The better your agency, the better your chances of getting a good job.”

Thank you Lea, for the great interview!

Fashion shows at Fashion Week – The fashion capitals

Every big city has its own fashion week, in which various larger or smaller designers present their new fashion collections with models in staged shows. The first fashion week took place in New York City in the early 1940s. The former name of Fashion Week was “Press Week”. The audience at the fashion weeks of this world is different and ranges from buyers of big fashion chains to celebrities and fashion enthusiasts. The big fashion weeks take place, with the exception of twice a year. This allows designers to present their spring and summer collections, as well as their autumn and winter collections, to a wide audience and with great media effort. Among the world’s most influential fashion weeks are the so-called “Big Four”: New York, Paris, London and Milan.

Fashion Week – Start and course of fashion week

The fashion shows of well-known designers such as Marc Jacobs or Georgio Armani usually take 15 minutes, there are of course deviations. Every designer realizes his own visions with the fashion show. There is therefore no fixed sequence of the individual fashion shows. Most designers take a basic sequence for orientation. In every fashion show there is an opening model that is very important for the designer. The first impression of his fashion collections on the critical audience must be perfect. The models usually present several outfits and walk twice over the catwalk. There is a graduation model that is also of great importance to the designer. The highlight of the collection is intended to surprise and fascinate the audience at the end of the show. At the end of each fashion show the models run one after the other, together across the catwalk and show the audience their outfit once again.

Fashion Week New York – the “Who’s Who” of the fashion industry

Sitting in the front row of New York Fashion Week: A dream of many young girls! Whoever has made it here is an integral part of the fashion scene and belongs to the inner circle. Fashion Week in New York is one of the most exclusive and successful fashion weeks in the world. With this in mind, Fashion Week in the Big Apple opens Fashion Weeks every season as the first of the fashion capitals. While Bryant Park used to be the venue for the fashion shows, today the Lincoln Center is the fashion hot spot of New York Fashion Weeks. More than 50 main shows by well-known designers such as Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors or Ralph Lauren inspire the audience in the Lincoln Center. In addition to the big fashion shows, there are numerous smaller fashion shows in galleries or other exclusive locations in Manhattan. Models present the new women’s and men’s collections, while painting and female-models walk the catwalk together to some extent. The number of visitors to DES Fashion-Event is in six digits. Fashion editors and fashion bloggers are competing for the coveted spots next to the catwalk.

Fashion-Week Paris – the cream of women’s fashion

In addition to the New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week is also of great importance in the fashion scene. The Paris Fashion Week usually takes place last, after the fashion weeks of the other three fashion metropolises. The Fashion Week Paris programme includes more than 90 major fashion shows. Highlights include the fashion shows by Chanel, Dior and Alexander McQueen. The fashion collections of the designers exude a mysterious charm, a flair that makes Paris a very special fashion city. At the Fashion Week Pret-à-porter Fashion is presented for the most part. But even the popular haute couture is not missed out in Paris: at numerous evening events, fashion enthusiasts can watch the haute coutur shows. In Paris, haute couture, an upmarket art of tailoring, was born. Extravagant, high-quality, expensive and not suitable for everyday use. Fashion that is also interpreted as true art for outsiders. The haute couture elements of the fashion collections are the highlights of every designer. The development of haute couture was a triumph of fashion history and still shapes the fashion scene today. The idea for classic fashion shows as we know them today also originated in Paris. After an influential designer of the time, Mr. Charles Frederick Worth, opened several fashion houses in France, he began to have his collections presented by models. His vision: to present fashion in the best possible way. A marketing strategy that took off and became an achievement of the fashion industry.
